CHRISTCHURCH EXHIBITION.

DISCUSSED IN WELLINGTON.

PESSIMISTIC OPINIONS.

[BY TKLEURAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION'.]

Wellington', Tuesday. Reference was made to the Christctmroli Exhibition at the annual dinner of the Industrial Association.

Mr. T. Ballinger said it would be very interesting, and would bring a large influx of visitors. Indirectly the gain would be large, but they could hardly expect the exhibition to be a financial success. Most, big exhibitions ended in a loss. The small ones held by local industrial association!, had all shown a profit. Replying to a toast, Mr. S. Blown said he was doubtful as to the after-effects of the exhibition. It was inviting other countries to use New Zealand as a dumpingground. After the exhibition, with all this stuff dumped oil the markets, there would be depression, and the loss would fall on the colony as a whole. At another stage the same speaker said that in many lines of manufacture New Zealand would be largely crippled at 110 very distant date, and we were not training up any artisan class. The Harvester Trust was also a topic of several speeches, the general consensus of opinion from M.H.R.'s and others present being that something must be done, and it was hoped the Labour Conference would be able to come to a modus vivendi. Blenheim, Tuesday. At a meeting of the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce to-day it was resolved that a committee be set up to arrange for representation of this province at the International Exhibition in Christchurch, and that with this end in view a conference of local bodies be convened for the beginning of next month. Confidence was expressed that Marlborough would be able to establish an exhibit of barley, oats, fax, »vool, and other produce second to none. It was stated that shearing had been commenced, but doubtless the pastoralists would save their best, iieeces for the exhibition. There is every prospect of the matter being '.aken up with enthusiasm.
