DEVON PORT POST OFFICE.
DEPUTATION TO THE MINISTER.
[by TELEGRAPH. — CORRESPONDENT.]
Wellington, Tuesday. Tub Postmaster-General was interviewed to-night by Mr. Alison and Mr. R. Logan in regard to the proposed new post office at Devorrport. The deputation urged that it was imperative that a suitable post office and telephone exchange should be erected, as the population of the borough had outgrown the capacity of the present office, and now numbered over 5000 people. It was asked that provision bo made on the Supplementary Estimates fox the purchase of a site and the erection of a building. Reference was also made to tho need for greater facilities in regard to telephonic communication with Auckland after five o'clock in the evening.
Mr. Alison stated that the Borough Council was still prepared to erect a building, combining post and telephone accommodation with the municipal offices, at the corner of the triangle, where the present Council Chamber' is situated, and to charge a reasonable rental.
Sir Joseph Ward said that the matter had been repeatedly pressed upon him by Mr. Alison, and the Department jecognised that a new post office was required. In fact, the whole matter was now under the consideration of the Cabinet. If it was decided to erect the office provision would be made on the Supplementary intimites As the borough was rapidly progressing, it would be necessary to have a larger building than that at Parnell, and the cost would be not less than £4000.
