FRENCH GIRL'S ROMANCE.
A Strange love story come. l : from Liverpool. The French Consul-General in that city, the Marquis de obi and, was waited upon by a stylishly-dressed young lady. She stated that she was Mile. Josephine C'oulinge, a native of Marseilles, and that she had been brought from that place to Liverpool by a ship's officer. The passage was made in her lover's ship, and she said it had been arranged that they' should bo married when they reached England. To her dismay her lover refused to fulfil his promise, and saiiled away again, leaving her friendless in Liverpool. She was not without money, but she appealed for assistance ill finding her lover's whereabouts and compelling him to keep his word. The Coustil-General promised to lmiiko inquiries and in the meantime found her lodgings with a French family. On entering his office a few days later he found on the table a packet addressed to himself, accompanied by a note. On opening the packet he discovered some articles of jewellery and money. The note surprised liim. It was, of course, in French, and ran:— so good as to accept the enclosed, with my everlasting thanks for your kindness. Adieu! I am too desolate to live any longer. 1 must die. If —— is found tell him I could not live Without him. arid that he was forgiven by his broken-hearted JosSpraNfe." Alarmed by this missive, the. marquis , drove with all speed to the girl's lodgings. On the door of her room being forced she was» found hanging behind it apparently dead. Without delay the cord was cut and pulled from her neck, and medical aid summoned. The doctor found there was still life in the Iwdy, and after a; time, brought : the lady round. She was taken into cus- : tody on the charge o? attempt A' suicide, and was brought before the magistrates. ! Mr. Lord, who defended, said that the : Marquis de Trobiand was making arrange- : merits for the prisoner's future care, and j was in communication with her friends, j Mile. Coulingc was remanded.
