REMUERA CHILDREN'S HOME. A large number of ladies aud jjentleuieu visited the Remuera Children's Home last evening, the occasion being: the visitors' annual dinner. The visitors had tea in the diningroom at a table running down the centre of the room, and the children were placed at tables to the side of it. Aftor dinner a service was held, the Rev. J. B. Sn»yd | officiating. -, The children joined in the hymns, and showed that in this respect they had been well trained. After the service a few remarks were mad* by Messrs. G. Robinson. Medley and Rowntreo on the excellent condition of tins institution,, and these were acknowledged by the president, Mrs. Giles. All the speakers spoke in eulogistic terms of the of Miss Carnie (the matron). Miss Hay (secretary), and the committee. Tho visitors were then shown over the building. The high praise given to the officials by those who inspected the rooms, etc., was most certainly deserved. There was a perfection of orderliness everywhere, and the children were the picture of happiness and healthiness. A children's service was he-Id after the inspection. The twelfth anniversary tea and public meeting will be held on Tuisday next at St. James' Hail. ■ . V WAITEMATA COUNTY COUNCIL. The ordinary meeting of the Waitemata County Council was held yesterday afternoon. There were present: Messrs. A. Bruce (chairman), A. G. Hatfield, .T. H. O'Neii, A. Cochran, J. MeLeod, H. H. Adams, T. Horton, J. Drinnan and V. F. Kerr-Taylor. The following tenders wore accepted:—Supply of/ 200 cubic yards of metal at Hobsonvillo: Mr. Trayes, 8? 3d per yard. Formation of 65 chains of Withers' Road, Waiitumete: Mr. F. Rosier, £28 2s 9d. Annual carting at Helensville: Mr. T. Prendergast,. at the following prices for metal and scoria respectively:—Swingbridge to the creamery, 2s 3d and 2s; to Vercoo's corner, 2s 3d and 2s; to Fordyce Road, 5s and 2s 6d; to James Vercoe's and W. Rimmer's, 3s 6d and ss; to the boundary to M. MoAdam's and to Mr. * McDonald's properties, 3s 6d and 3s 3d; to McFarlane's school, 5s and 4s 6d. On the motion of Mr. Cochran it was decided to make a deviation of and repairs to Levy's Road. It was resolved to call for tenders for a bridge near Mr. McCarnlcy's land. Five pounds were voted to the Devonport Borough Council to repair the old Lake Road. The engineer was instructed to prepare an estimate of the cost of draining tho Northcotc Riding and to divide the estimate so as to show the cost to each section of the district proposed to be drained. The town clerk of Auckland, wrote granting permission to deviate the road through Mr. Elleman's property while the Nihotupu bridge is being repaired. ANTI-PROHIBITION. Mr. J. Dixon Ward addressed a meeting of electors at Helensville on Thursday evening last. There was a crowded attendance, and the lecturer luid an enthusiastic reception, being listened /to attentively throughout and frequently applauded. Several questions were asked at the close of the meeting, and were answered by the speaker. Mr. Charles Newman occupied the chair.
