The ground was exceedingly sloppy, but, notwithstanding this, the game', particularly in the second spell, when Manawatu were, on, tho attack, was-fast and exciting. In the. first half there was no score, but after once crossing tin* line the home team managed to rattle on three tries, none of which, however, were converted. The. scores were the result of good back play. The Hawke's Bay forwards were a better combination, but the Manawatu backs were, faster, trickier, and safer than the visitors' rear division. SOUTHLAND DEFEATED BY OTAGO. [BY TELEGRAM.-- ASSOCIATION.] Du.N'iiui.v, Saturday. The Otago representatives met, Southland on the Caledonian Ground to-day. The weather was splendid, and about 5000 spectators witnessed the game, which resulted in a win for Otago by 11 points to 3, The game was fast and interesting throughout, and, from the spectator's point of view, one. of tho best games played hero for some time. Tho win was a meritorious one, as, owing to the unfortunate accident, particulars of which appear elsewhere, Otago had to play with 14 men for rather more than half the time, Southland had rather the best of the serum work, but in the loose the home forwards showed up to good advantage. The Otago backs were, decidedly superior to their opponents, and gave an excellent exposition in every department of the game. Southland lacked resource and combination. About five minutes after (ho start of the game Marlon' obtained a try for Southland, after a good run down the line. _ Reed failed to convert. Just before half-time Southland attacked strongly, and it was at this stage that Bailey was injured. Otago staved oft' the attack, and shortly after tho resumption of play Eskhold made a run, and then passed to Bennett, who managed to ground the ball before being pushed into touch. Adams failed with the kick at. goal. About half-way through the spell Gilray centred with a fino kick. Murphy's return was charged down, and Mclntyro scored in a fair position. Adams again almost scored. Immediately afterwards Bennett and Gilray failed in an attempt to (ouch the ball down in the race for it over the line. Towards the finish Southland became aggressive, and narrowly missed scoring from a mark by Jenkins, inside (Hugo's 25. Just on the call of time Gilray _ scored the. third try for Otago, after a nice run. Adams converted. Otago thus won by 11 points to 3.
