•LECTUEE TO BLACKSMITHS. Mr. ,T. Lyons, M.8.C.V.5., rave the second of a series of lectures on " The Horse's Foot," in the Technical School Buildings, last evening. Mr. Lyons dealt with the anatomy of the horse's foot in a most instructive way, and those present listened with marked attention. DEBATE AT THIS UNIVERSITY. A keenly contested debating contest took place at the Auckland University College last evening, between the Auckland University College and the Athenaeum Debating Societies. Dr. Bamford, president of the University society, presided, and there was a large attendance. The subject chosen was whether the granting of the freehold of Crown lands would be more advantageous to the community than the disposal of them by lease. ■ The Athenaeum society, represented by Messrs. K. 11. A. Potter, ,T. B. Johnston, and E. Earle Vaile, took the affirmative, and the University, represented by Messrs. B. C. Hoodie, M. H. Hampson, and ,J. Stanton, .the negative; while Mr. B. Kent acted as umpire, and Messrs, W. J. Morrell and T. Peacock as judges. The judges awarded the honours to the Athenanm society. BIRKENHEAD £UGAK WOEKERS' UNION. The monthly meeting of the Birkenhead Sugar Workers' Union was held in the Methodist Hall, Birkenhead, last night. Mr. James Harris was voted to the effair. A proposal to build a hall 00ft by 30ft, in connection with the union, was discussed, ar.id the plans considered. It was decided to defer the matter for one month. A committee wis appointed to make arrangements for the union's social, to be held on the eve of Labour Day. A general meeting of the Auckland Co-operative Terminating Building Society will be held at St. James' Hall on Tuesday iiext, when appropriations will be disposed of by sale and ballot.
