Mr. A. Cerutty, wharf manager for the Huddart-Parker Company at Auckland, returned to Wellington from a holiday visit to Sydney by the Moeraki on Wednesday. Mr. H. Johansen, of the auxiliary screw schooner Huia, and Mr. Thus. Cooper, of Lyttelton, have both passed their examinations for certificates of competency as mates of passenger vessels in the home or coasting trade. Mr. D. Robertson, of the Phoenix Foundry, Wellington, has received news that his second son, Mr. David Robertson, who went to flic East as second engineer of the Waihora after her sale by the Union Company, has gone to London and passed the examination for a chief engineer's certificate under the Board of Trade regulations. A Blenheim Press Association telegram slates that the citizens presented Mr. Tims. Orr, the Union Steam Ship Company's manager at Blenheim, with a token of esteem in the shape of a silver salver and purse of 144 sovereigns. The Mayor (Mr. E H. Pony) made the presentation. He referred to the recipient's sendee of 20 years in the colony and 14 in Blenheim in the employ of the Union Steam Ship Company. Air. Orr remains in Blenheim. Mr. Walter Brodic, who has been transferred front the staff of the Bank of New Zealand at Paeroa, to lake charge of the branch at Te Aroha, was presented on Thursday night with a gold albert and locket-, and an illuminated address, from the citizens of Paeroa. The presentation was made by Mr. 11. Poland (county chairman), on behalf of the subscribers, reference being made to Mr. Brodie's unfailing courtesy both in and out of the bank, and the general regret felt at his departure. Mr. Brodie returned thanks in suitable terms. A Christchurch Press Association telegrain states that Mr. George Lambie, for 17 years manager of the Union Steamship Company at Christchurch, was, on the occasion of his retirement, presented at the annual meeting of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce with a purse of sovereigns. Eulogistic references were made to the work done by Mr. Lambie, the chairman (.Mr. A. L. Parsons) saying that by his retirement the community would lose a very capable, highly efficient, and an extremely popular officer, -Mr. Lambie left by the Wimmera for Sydney yesterday.

The engineers coining out with the.Union Company's new turbine steamer Malieno I are:— Mr. R. Wallace (late of Moe- | raki); second, Mr. T. White (late of Moeraki) ; third, Mr. 1). McDonald (late third of Monowai); the junior engineers of the Maheno are also New landers. The engineers who come out to Australia by the Union Company's recently-purchased cargo steamer Wairuna (late Matapnpo) were: Chief, Mr. Paget, who will he relived in New Zealand by Mr. Dunlop (chief engineer id' Mokoia); .second, Mr. Dunwood (of Onchunga); third, Mr. .J. S. Brown (late id' Petone workshops) fourth, Mr. Hislop (late of Dunedin). Mr. Dunlop has be?n relieved as chief engineer of the Moknin by Mr. J. Darling, late chief engineer of the Taieri, who in turn has been succeeded by Mr. P. Mickey. The latter was acting-chief cmnncer of the Tarawera in place of Mr. W. L. Bnnnatyne during his holiday at Home. The engineers of the Union Company's new West Coast-Wel-lington steamer Aralinra are; Chief, Mr. T.'Scott (late of Kotnku); second, Mr. P. Beveridge (late third of Penguin); and other New Zealanders fill the positions of junior engineers. The engines of the i Union Company's new Island trader Atua will be in charge of Mr. 11. .1. Dove (late chief of Aparima). Mr. J. Cameron, second engineer of the Mapourika, who sustained injuries to his hand, has ben relieved by Mr. ,1. A. Davie, of the company's .shore stall. Mr. G. S. Anderson, late'third id' the Mokoia, has been given charge of the engines of the company's new Gisborne tender.
