THE SAN FRANCISCO MAIL

Thk mail steamer Sierra arrived from Sydney yesterday morning, after a somewhat rough passage. leaving Sydney on Mon-. day afternoon last, the steamer encountered a. .strong south-west gale, with a very heavy I beam sea, which continued all the way j across the lasman Sea, At times the decks were Hooded, owing to the seas breaking on board, and the passage was a most unpleasant one. Approaching the New Zealand coast on Thursday afternoon finer weather 1 set in, and continued until the harbour was made at sewn a.m. yesterday. The- Sierra, brought a number of passengers for Auckland, and had also a large number for island ports and San Francisco, the 1 list being considerably added to at this port. The cargo by the steamer from Sydney, included the usual lines of Australian produce, and at this port lines of meats, produce, etc., for Samoa, and kauri gum, hemp, rabbit skins, etc., for San Francisco, were taken on board. The Sierra resumed her voyage to Pago Pago, Honolulu, and San Francisco, shortly after three p.m. yesterday, and is due at the Californian port on September 11, her mails being timed to reach London on September 23.
