. ; ••HAMILTON. ' ; That there has been a large increase of musical talent in Hamilton of late was very forcibly demonstrated on Wednesday evening by the concert given in aid of the hospital library. Unfortunately the attendance was not so largo as the quality of the entertainment should have commanded. The Hamilton Orchestral Union, under the conductorship of Mr. Savage, played several good selections in a pleasing manner. Mrs. Langley-Shaw and Mr. Savage gave a violin duct which was deservedly encored.

A meeting of ratepayers in the Claudelands footbridge special rating area was held on Friday afternoon in tho Waikato County Council Chambers. The members of the Council were present, and Mr'. Primrose, the chairman, presided. The meeting was called to decide what steps should be taken in consequence of the estimated cost of the bridge exceeding the former estimate by nore than £1000. A poll had been taken authorising a loan of £500, but £1000 would now. be required; The chairman explained that the business would have -.to-bo commenced over again.-. After a 'lengthy discussion, the lollowing resolutions were carried; (1) That the rating area remain as at piesent; (2) that a poll be taken to authorise the Council to act in tho matter. It was anticipated that a Commission could bo set up to allocate the proportion which tho Hamilton Borough should contribute. A deputation waited upon; tho Borough Council in the evening to ask that the Council would co-operate in. getting the proposed bridge erected. The Council took no action in the matter. An adjourned meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council was held on Friday. There were present:—His Worship the Mayor (Mr. J. S. Bond), and Messrs. Davis, Coates, Stone, McDiarmid, Hardley, Barton, Edgccumbe, young, and.Brewis. Before commencing, the Mayor formally introduced Mr. Sims (the newly-appointed town clerk) to the Council, and extended to him a hearty welcome. Mr. Jolly, secretary ,of the Hamilton Tennis Club, wrote asking the Council to lease about half-an-acre of land adjoining the Town, Hall for the purpose of • forming tennis courts. It was decided to appoint a committee to confer with "the Tennis Club, and report to the Council. A letter was received from the secretary of the Fire Brigade asking that necessary appliances be procured. This was referred to tho Legal and Finance Committee. The Mayor reported as follows in reference to matters referred to at last meeting:—Screened gravel: The committee appointed to deal with this matter accepted the following tenders:— and Jolly, .for screening gravel at borough pits,' and carting same to where required in Victoria-street, at 5s per yard; J Howe, for screening gravel on Messrs, Hardlcy Bros.''land, Victoria-street., at 3s lOd per yard. Sanitary depot: Mr. Barton and the Mayor waited upon Mr. Dalglelsh, and agreed with him to pay £30 for the surrender of his, lease. Sanitary, bylaws- Dr. Frengley and Mr. Swarbrick had a further 'conference on this mtter, and had agreed to include a scries of clauses to suit tho drainage area when completed. The report was adopted.

CAMBRIDGE. THB sixth annual ball of D Squadron, Cambridge, was held at the Alexandra Hall on Friday .evenintr last, about .100 people being present, including visitors from all parts of.,the district. Supper was served in a large marquee detached from the hall, and was presided over by the Reception Committee, Mcsdames. J. Taylor, B. Roberts, G.-Me-CiiUagh, and ,T. Ferguson. Excellent music was provided by Mr. J. H. Edwards' orchestra The MC's were Sergeant-Major Bruce, Corporal Richards, and Trooper Anderson. During the evening the Mayor presented the shield won by tie D Squadron at the recent encampment, and an enlarged photograph of the team to SergeantMajor Bruce, who had charge of he team. Mrs. Jas Taylor presented the medals won by each member of the team. Messrs. L. D. £ attain and Co '"cup was presented to Trooper Walhs, and the veteran's medal to Sergeant-Major Bruce. PAEBOA. AN cniovable concert was given in the Criterion Com -fc Hall on Thursday ..night by the I'aeroa Mandoline, Banjo, and Guitar Club. A number of KSttl -items were performed by the club, under the conductors!*, of Mr. Parson*. Inst u mrmhil selections were also rendered by Mrs. SSa Mise L. Medhurst, A. Cootc, and Vva ad Messrs.
