HOW THE RULER OF JAVA TOOK
HIS FIRST RIDE.
Ma. Charles J- Glidden, of Boston, U.S.A., lias achieved the distinction of taking the Sultan of Java for his first trip ill a motor-car.
Mr. Glidden returned to London recently after a tour of 8899 miles. He intends to' ride his Napier car in every country of the world, and- has now completed'2s,loo miles on the same car. On his last trip, on. which his wife accompanied him, he visited the United States, Canada, Hawaii, Fiji, New Zealand, Tasmania, Australia, Java, and the Malay Peninsula, returning to England by sea from Singapore. Mr. Glidden thus completed a round of the world. His sea trips on the way aggregated 23,617 miles. V
Among the many friends lie made in the course of his travels the Sultan of Java occupies the most distinguished place. The Sultan was keenly interested in the account given by Mr. Glidden of the tour, and, after some persuasion, consented to take a ride in the car.
. With the Sultan were the Queen,.one of his daughters, and two ladies of the Court. In the tonneau at the" left of Mr. Glidden sat the bearer of the gold umbrella, the Sultan's emblem of rank and power, and the car was preceded and followed by detachments of Life Guards.
All along the route, which was illuminated, the people lined the roadway, falling almost on their faces as their monarch passed. The Sultan was very timid, and when the car went more 'than four miles an hour he uttered a terrified "Tut, tut," which was the signal to slacken speed.
Mr. and Mrs. Glidden will start another tour in November, during which they will again circle the globe. The countries they have yet to visit are:—Spain, Portugal, Algeria, Tunis, Tripoli, Sicily,V Hungary, Turkey, Greece, Egypt, Syria, India, Ceylon, Burma, Borneo, Sumatra, Philippines, Siam, China, and Japan.
