While steaming past the Island of Ascension on her way to Now Zealand the steamer Kaipara grazed a coral patch at a, spot where there is supposed to bo 100 t , fathoms of water. As there was no sign of a leak, the steamer came on to port. A survey was made to-day by Mr. Morrison, marine ; surveyor for Lloyd's, ; and: Mr. A. Walker, inspector of machinery. It was , found that the vessel,had, grazed the coral reef for about 20ft amidship, but beyond the cracking of the cement lining in', the hull for a few feet the damage was verytrifling.
