SibJ. WARD, speaking at the opening of the neff rnilwy station at Pctone to-day, said ho hoped the whole work of straightening and duplicating the railway line between Wellington , and Hult, and the reclamation forks i' l connection therewith, would be fliijslicd in two or three years. He believed the electrification of some of the railways ff as ''.within reasonable distance fof accomjiljsliment, He had very, little doubt that within the.next five years, certainly'within die next seven yews, on a number of lines of railway from cities to populous suburbs, the motive power would- be electricity, not steam. '' The. work of duplicating the Auek-land-I'ciiroscline would be put in hand during" the next 1 hree weeks. 'He anticipated starting^ ll 'lie duplication of the Dunedin to Mosgiol line in about six weeks. The duplication of the Christchurch to Rojleston, gection would be put in hand ere long. $
