NEWS FROM COUNTRY DISTRICTS.

[from our own correspondents,] KAWAKAWA. 1 A MOST interesting: game of football wad played last Saturday between the teams of North and South, which resulted in a win for the latter by six points. ■ The Kawakawa • volunteer corps has been converted into a mounted corps. The first parade was held on' Saturday, 24th ult., and although the weather was most unpropitious a fair number put in an appearance, Ser-geant-Major Roagers and Major Eccles being 1 in , command. After parade an election ofl olhoers took place, which resulted as follows : A. Graham, captain; G. Tabutean, first lieutenant; W. Galley, second lieutenant. . A wedding was celebrated here on the Ist inst. in the Roman Catholic Church, the contracting parties being Miss Crowley, of Opua, and Mr. Meldren, of Opua sawmill. PAEKOA. A HOCKEY match was played at Waihou on Saturday last between teams from the Paeroa and Waihou Hockey Clubs. The game was won by the Waihou team by four goals to two. A return match, will be played at i'aeroa on Saturday, . MATAMATA. DURING the last week or so heavy frosts have j prevailed in this district, but during the day the weathei has been so line that the local roads have considerably improved, they are still, however, in some places almost impassable. T!he foreman of works and his men are now engaged in repairing Muuroe's hill. It is understood that a largely-signed petition is going to be presented to the Government praying for a bridge to be built over the Waihou River, so as to give the Okaria Crown tenants an outlet to Matamata, thereby enabling these settlers to have convenient access to the new school and creamery about to be erected upon the northeastern side of the Matamata estate, better known as Turanga-o-Moana. The timber for this new creamery is now upon th« ground, and the surrounding settlers all nope to see the concern in active operation during the ensuing season. The proposed new bridge will be a great boon to three districts, as it directly connects with the main road leading right to the W&liaroa station. The local schools have all reopened aftaff the midwinter holidays, there being a now assistant-teacher,. Miss M. A. Shanaghan, aS» tached_ to the Matainata school. Consider* able dissatisfaction exists locally on account of the want of accommodation in this school. There is some talk of forming a Jfatamata District Rugby Union in this end of the country. » . On Saturday evening last a settlers' meeting was held in the Matamata woolshed, when it, was decided to form a local branch of the Farmers' Union, six members being then enrolled, and a general meeting called to thoroughly organise this branch. Afterwards a : creamery co-operation was discussed, but it was finally resolved to accept the terms of Messrs. Am bury and English for the ensuing season. . On Saturday .evening, in Waharoa, a meeting of those interested was held to consider the matter of holding a dance'in the local hall, it being decided to arrange one for the evening of the 14th inst. Most of the local settlers have taken asvantage of the fine weather during the LwS week to get their oats cut into chaff, Mresrs. Foreman Bros.' chaffcutter being at preSKSA busily engaged in and around "this distriftThe Waharoa natives have sent away by train a considerable quantity of chaff to tne Auckland market this season. In consequence of the recent considerably increased population in and around Mata/mata this riding will, at the ensuing county council election, bo qualified to return two members, instead of one as formerly, so that those concerned are now discussing the expediency of forming a ratepayers' association in the Matainata Riding, to select candidates. A store in Waharoa has recently changed hand 3. the'late proprietor. Mr. R. A. Forsman. having sold ont to Mr. A. ,T. Long, of Auckland. The late proprietor is not leaving this district, so that Waharoa will not.; by the change, lose one of its most useiut; and respected residents.
