ATHLETIC NOTES.
IIOCKHY. Tub Auckland Hockey Club held their first practice at the Eemuera polo ground oh Saturday. A and 1! teams were selected, and the match ended in a, draw, the score being one goal all. As might bo expected at the commencement of the season, the hookey displayed was not, of a very high order. Some of the new members showed fair form for the first time with the stick. OPENING OF TUP. THAMES HOCKEY SEASON. IMY XIiLKGKAI'K. — OWN ( UHKKSI'ONDKNT.J THAMES, Saturday. The hockey season of 1903 was inaugurated this afternoon under exceptionally favourable circumstances. The weather and ground were perfect, and there was a splendid muster of players, a, lot of new blood being conspicuous, Sides were chosen by the Rev, Williams and Mr.. Ilewett. the latter team eventually winning by seven goals to three. In the first spell Hcwett's team over-ran their opponents, and put ii]) live goals without much opposition. In the second spell, however, the veteran skipper rallied his men, and scored three goals to the two against them. For the winners Kingham, who was well, led throughout the game, scored six goals and the Kev. Thompson one. For the losers Crispe -cored two goals and Griffen one. The cup fixtures commence on Satnrdav. Mav 20.
