THE annual meeting of the Hamilton Chess Club was held on Thursday evening, 'the annual report stated that two inter-club matches had been played, and both won by the local club. THERE was a large gathering in the Methodist Church on Thursday evening, the occasion being a social to formally welcome the Kev. A. V. Wilkinson to the chaise of the Coromandel Church, to which office he has been recently appointed. Mr. John Cleave, circuit steward, presided, and in the name of the Methodists of Coromandel heartily welcomed Mr. Wilkinson. Tho superintendent of the Sunday-school and Band of Hope also presented an address of welcome to the new minister. An enjoyable musical programme was submitted and ranch appreciated. Refreshments ad lb. were supplied by the ladies. The programme was as follows:—Pianoforte duet. Miss Nixon and I>r. Wilkinson: solo, "Gates or the West," Miss Lois Applegate; solo, "The Refuge of the Soul," Miss Edgar; pianoforte duet. "Saltan's Grand March," Misses Golds-worthy and Collier; reading. "Talking the Parson" Up." Mr. K. Blackmore: solo, "Star of Bethlehem," Miss Bridsonj violin solo. "La Serenata." Hiss Nixon: vocal duet, "Beautiful Light," Mrs. Me.lndoe and Miss Bridson; recitation. Mr. Hugh Gibaour; pianoforte I transcription. "The Old Hundredth'.' (in this item an eld friend was presented in new guise with pleasing effect), Miss Nixon; solo. " The Soul's Awakening." Miss Johnson: pianoforte duet, the Misses Applegate; address by Kev. A. V. Wilkinson, who returned thanks for the cordial welcome accorded to him. Mr. R. Blackmore proposed a vote of thanks to the performers, which was carried by acclamation.
