THE GOLDFIELDS.

GOLDEN BELT G.M. CO. Regarding the 3fb reef recently cut in the Goldcu Belt Gold Mining Company's mine, the superintendent (Mr. H. H. Adams) states that he has every reason to believe it is the haugingwall of the Ajax lode. This is the main ore body for which ho Mas driving at the low level. Mr. Adams slates that ho has now driven aud cut the maiu footwall, and that the reef is fully Bft. wide, and of a. very kindly appearance. HAURAKI SOUTH TRIBUTERS. [BY TELEGRAPH,—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] COBOMAXDEL, Saturday. Messrs. Keen ami party, tributers in the Hauraki South mine, treated at the old Hauraki battery three tons of general ore, for a. return of 50/, of retorted bullion, valued at £15 Is. WAIHI GRAND JUNCTION G.M. CO. [BY TELEGRAM!. OWN" CORRESPONDENT.] Waiiii, Saturday. At the Waihi Grand Junction mine splendid progress is being made with the battery work. The stamp foundations have been completed, and a start has been made with the erection of the buildings. The electrical expert, who is to determine the site of the power-house, will most probably leave Home for New Zealand next mouth. Work underground is also proceeding satisfactorily, and No. 2 lode at No. 3 level has been opened up for a distance of 115 ft. The lode is about oft bin wide, aud bears just about the same appearance as in the upper level. Driving on No. 1 lode is proceeding, and about 50ft have been driven each way from the crosscut. Only the footwall side is being taken, the lode being so large, but it is intended to crosscut into the reef when about 100 ft have been driven. The value .aid demensions of the lode matter will then be ascertained at that point. OLD ALBURNIA G.M. CO. [from our OWN' CORRESPONDENT.] " Thames, Saturday. The main tunnel in the Old Alburnia mine was exteuded 12ft last week, the slow progress being due to another hard boulder coming in. Tito face is now improving, and good country is making again in the back of the drive. A few feet further should see the hard boulder left behind, when better progress will be made. NEW MAY QUEEN G.M. CO. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Saturday. During the past week the workings on No. 4 lode, m the intermediate level at the New May Queen mine have been suspended, owing to the staff being all engaged in the work of unwatering the shaft, which has about 150 ft of water in it. The Thames Hauraki pump having reduced the water iu the Hauraki to below the bottom of the -May Queen shaft, it will now be only necessary to sink a borehole from the bottom of the May Queen shaft for about 15ft to connect with a drainage crosscut from the Thames Hauraki shaft. The preparations for this work are now completed, and the borehole is down about 2ft. The drainage being effected, it .""ill enable the company to commence work on this, the lower, block of ground, that was partly opened up by the old May Queen Company, aud which had to bo abandoned by that company, owing to the stoppage of the Thames Hauraki pump and the rising of the water in the shaft. v

NEW SAXON G.M. CO. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN - CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Saturday. The principal work done in the New Saxon mine during the week has been the sinking of the winze. This is now down 75ft. A survey lias been made of these workings during the week, to ascertain the position of the reef at No. 4 level, and the result has convinced the manager that the reef is the same that was worked on by Lucas and party at No. 4 level some three years ago, and which then gave very satisfactory results, yielding an average of about 4oz to the load. The drive on No. 1 Cardigan reef at No. 4 level has been cleaned out to the face, and it is intended to continue this drive another 150 ft, which should bring it under the winze being sunk from No. 2 level, when a short crosscut in the liangingwall should cut Lucas' reef. a rise from there would connect with the winze, and would enable the block to be worked much moiv cheaply from No. 4 level than from the winze, ; and would also give good ventilation. Very little workhas been done in the slopes during the week, as the men from these workings were engaged on No. 4 level, where there is no change in the appearance of the leader. NEW MOANATAIARI G.M. CO. [)JY TELEGRAPH.— CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Saturday. The manager of the New Moanataiari mine reports that good progress continues to bo made with the extension of the south-east crosscut, the face having been extended 21ft for the week, making the total distance driven by the present contractors 71ft. Country of the most favourable description is * still being passed through in the stopes on the big reef, over the level. Good mineral is being met with. No gold has been seen here yet, but the manager is very hopeful of picking up the continuation of" the good ore worked below the level. During "the week good strong streaks and dabs of gold were seen through the ore broken from the workings on the winze below the level. The mineral seam being followed here has grown smaller again, but the country on the hangingwall of the lode continues good, so that the prospects downward are most encouraging. The tailings from the last crushing are being treated at the battery, and will be all through by Tuesday or Wednesday next. MAY QUEEN EXTENDED G.M. CO. [BY TELEGRAPfI.—OWN' CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Saturday. In the May Queen Extended mine the winze on No. 2 reef has been sunk 26ft, and the prospects met with are .encouraging. Colours and dabs of gold were seeD alf the «'ay down at each breaking down, and the reef is heavily mineralised. A start has now been made to drive both ways from the bottom of the winze, so as to open up a block of ground for toping. The reef at the bottom is a good compact body of quartz, about lft in thickness, and contains nice mineral indications, with colours of gold showing among the mineral. The- country is easily worked, being a mild sandstone, and as the drive progresses it will prove the value of the reef below the level of the main drive. SOUTHERN MINING.
