SEVERAL LIVES LOST. Xires lias reached Sydney l>v the Mc.-sa-genes Maritime* Company s island steamer Paritique to the effect that about a, fortnight ago a lugger foundered in the' New Hebrides Group, with the result that several lives were lust. It appears that the auxiliary schooner Lola (formerly l)r. ScotSkiiving'b private yacht), which was recenly stranded a*- Malo Pass, and was refloated bv a tidal wave, arrived at Port, Vila, towing the derelict- lggger lately owned by Ivor Petersen, of Ambrym. Whilst cruising off Aoba. the Lola, spoke Petersen's lugger, and ci stonTi coining on the vessels separated. On the return of the Lola to the Aoba coast traders reported that Petersen's lugger had sunk. A squall struck her, and her ballast shifting forward she went down by the head. The Lola found her, and on raising her discovered this body of George Collins, an Ambiym trader, floating in the hold. Ivor Petersen and his native crew attempted to swim ashore, but have not since been heard of. - Petersen was one of the best known traders in the group, and his d/at.h ie universally regretted in tins New Hebrides. The day prior to the fatality Petersen had lost his whaleboat in a squall.
