SOCIETY FOR THE PROTECTION OF WOMEN AND CHILDRES.

ANNUAL MEETING.

The annuel meeting of tho Society for the Protection of Women and Children and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held in the City Council Chambers yesterday Afternoon. Mr. Alfred Kidd, M.H.R., one of the vice-presidents, occupied the chair. The report stated that the society had to deplore the departure from the colony of 'he late president,. Lord fianturiy, who, with Lady Kanfurly. had. for seven years devoted much time and interest to the affairs of the society: and that it wad not too much to say that but for the generous support of Lord Kanfurly and the active interest which the countess took.in the foundation of , the Ladies' Committee the society must have either, passed out of existence or degenerated Into a, very small affair indeed. It was, however, a matter of congratulation that His Excellency Lord , l'lunket had consented to be the president of the society, and Lady I'lnnket had agreed to preside over the Ladies' Committee. The Ladies' Committee, founded by.Lord and Lady Kanfurly in 1599, had done much useful work. • The ladies liad, since the establishment of the committee. added to the receipts the large sum of £335 17s 3d. ajv average of £77 3s ad per annum. Especially were the thanks of the societv due to Mrs. Nelson, Mrs. Benjamin, Mrs. Bedford, the vice-presidents during the last five years. In the women and children s department it was found that there has been a very slight increase in the number of cases dealt with. The troubles between husband and wife dealt with totalled 93. against 103 in 1504; the cruelty to young children cases, fa against 29; the parents against children tor support cases. 12 against 9; affiliation cases, 45 against 43; various matters, ,16 .against 17; old cases reuealt with. 45. against 41: total. 256 its against 247. Of this large number 22 cases had to be dealt with m .tlie Magistrate's Court, and although the executive always regretted having to take tliese matters into Court, still it vras satisfactory to know that having done so the society 8 action was justified by tile result, as m eacii ease the society was succesefnl. - lhia department had almost, from tho first, been in the charge of Miss Porter, and lowing to her skilfnl management that the affairs of this division were so satisfactory. The value of the society to, the. State was exhibited by the table showing the ' lGtis amounts which unwilling husbands or parents had been compelled to pay., ana which, but for the society's action, must- in. the majority ot. cases have fallen upon the ratepayers. This stated that the amount , recovered by magistrates' orders to tall c £461 18j and by private arrangement Ml:i us 2d. a total sum of £833 10s 2d. The prevention of , cruelty to animals, branch of th work was only commenced m 13j3. lint c j" tinned to grow marvellously, and "* o> day gave the. strongest evidence that rac.li an .organisation was required. Jhron B B til instrumentality- of the society s insPf (Mr. Alder) various persons were mulcted in the sum of £13 13s for fines and costs. . Mr. H. Wilding having moved the adoption of the report, the llcv. Goldstein ant the chairman spoke of the splendid work done by the society, and tho necessity for its existence in the interests of the sulfcrers, whose case? called for attention, and whose sufferings were ameliorated as a remit of the steps taken by tho society. Mr. ividrl ventured the opinion that if the i»o----vernment was aware of the good work being carried on, a subsidy would be granted. t The treasurer's statement of accounts was presented by Mr. Geo. I'ovrlds, M.H.L., and showed a credit balance amounting to it> 16i 7d. Speaking on the question of a subsidy, Mr. Fowlds said tlrn society's work was 'such as should commend itself to Hie Government, and be saw no reason why assistance should not be granted. Ou the motion of the Be* Goldstein, it. was decided to appeal to t.'.e Government for ■issist'-nce. ~ . 4 oflicer for the ensuing year were elected •« under: —
