THE PUBLIC LIBRARY.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir.—The situation of the public library in Auckland is admirably central, and it is to be regretted that tho usefulness of the valuable reference room is seriously impaired by its closure from five to seven— the hours when business men and students of the University College and Technical School, who are engaged during tho day, would be best able to make use of it. It would surely be possible for the committee of management to arrange to have the library ; open throughout the day without the infliction of hardship upon the assistants. Even if less money wore spent in books the value of those available would be considerably increased.l am, etc., April 27. E. V. Howeix.
