THE HOSPITAL BOARD CHAIRMANSHIP.

A RESIGNATION AND REAPPOINTMENT.

At the meeting of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board yesterday, a letter was received front the chairman of the Board (Mr. J. McLeod), resigning his position as a member of the Board, He stated that he was compelled to take this course as he had ceased to be a member of the City Council, aud he considered that only representatives of the Council should hold the position of chairman of the Board.

Mr. G. J. Garland, who was acting as temporary chairman of the meeting, said that the members had all probably seen a paragraph in the Herald, statiug that the City Council, at its meeting on Thursday evening, had re-appointed Mr. McLeod as its representative 011 the Board. He was glad to see that, the members of (he Council had done this, aud he would like to see Mr. McLeod back in his old position. It would be necessary to accept the resignation, but following in the steps of the Council they had the power to appoint him a member of the Board again. The resignation was formally received and accepted,,and on the motion of the acting-chairman, seconded by Mr. W. R. Bloomfield, Mr. McLeod was reappointed a member of the Board.

Mr. Bloomfield then moved that the Board appoint Mr. McLeod chairman till the end of the present year.

Mr. J. Bollard, M.11.R., inquired if the proceedings were in order. He explained that he was entirely in favour of Mr. McLeod's re-appointment, but he did not want to see any informality in the matter, which might need rectifying later on. The vacancy was an extraordinary one, and he thought that as the matter was not on the business sheet of the present meeting, the appointment should be held over till the next meeting, when there would probably be a larger attendance. They had not. as yet received any notice from the City Council about the re-appointment, and lie would like to know what the Act'said on the matter.

The secretary the clauses in the Act dealing with the methods of filling an extraordinary vacancy.

Mr. A. Brace said that while they could appoint Mi. McLeod a member of the Board he would like to see his appointment as chairman held over till next meeting, when it. could come up on the ordinary business paper. Mr. A. R. Harris supported this view, and Mr. Bloomfield withdrew his motion on condition that the proposal was adopted.

A similar letter was received from Mr. S. C. Brown, who had also, previous to the Council election, represented the City Council on the Board, the writer stating that he was compelled to forward his resignation as be had ceased to be a member of tiie Council. The resignation was accepted, and the chairman suggested that the Council be asked to nominate Mr. Brown again as their representative.

At this juncture Mr. McLeod, who had been telephoned for, came in. Mr. Garland explained the position, and moved that Mr. McLeod be asked to take his old place in the chair. This was seconded by Mr. Bollard and carried unanimously.

Mr. McLeod then took the chair, a':id stated that he considered that only, representatives of the City Council should sit as chairman of the Board. However, he had been informed that the Council had been pleased to reappoint him, and lie fully appreciated the honour. He thanked them all for the confidence they had in him in asking him to again preside at the Board's meetings.
