London, April 26. The- Japanese have defeated the Russians in an encounter at Kaiyuen. Of the Russians 200 were killed, while the Japanese had only 38 casualties. (Received April 27, 11.44 p.m.) London, April 27. While one Russian column attacked Kaiyuen, another column attacked Chingtu. Oa the repulse at Kaiyuen taking place, both columns retreated northward. , General Linevitch reports that he has: made determined hut . futile attacks on Kaiyuen and Changtu. This movement is regarded in St. Petersburg as a diversion intended to check the Japanese movement towards Vladivostok. Possibly i- may mean that General Linevitch is to take the offensive. THE JAPANESE ADVANCING, MOVING OX KllllN. St. Petersburg, April 26. It. is reported here that the Chun* chuses are making a diversion on the west of the railway, and that the Japanese, in great : force, are advancing along the road to the east, of the railway and towards Kirin and Ninguta (a place near the HarbinVladivostok railway), with the object of isolating Vladivostok.
