AUCKLAND CITY COUNCIL.

The first meeting of the newly-elected City Council was held last night, the Mayor (the Hon. ]•). Mitchelson) being- in the chair. Mr. Arthur .Myers, the Mayor-elect, occupied a chair on. Mr. Mitchelson's left. The following councillors were present: Messrs. L. J. Bagnall, M. Casey, J. Court, A. J. Entrican, R. Farrell, A. E. Glover, C. Grey, W. E. Hutchison, G. Knight, C. J. Pair, H. M. Sraeeton, and It. Tudehope. The nen members made Ihe usual declaration before talcing their, seats.

Pile-driviug in Queen-street: Messrs. .Warrei?'Blyth and Co. wrote complaining of the danger of damage to their property arid drains through "the "• Tramways Company driving piles ift Queen-street. Similar communications were received from Messrs. Buddie, .Button, and Co., acting 011 behalf of the trustees of the late Thomas Hancock and the New Zealand Insurance Company, who own property near where the work is going on. The letters were received, the Mayor stating that every care has been taken by the engineer to see that, no drains were interfered with; 110 plans of the drainage of the street had been kept, but every precaution would be take* to avoid any accident. The City Refuse: The town clerk of Grey Lynn (Mr. K. 11. Irwin) wrote notifying the Council that permission had been refused to deposit rubbish within the Grey Lynn Borough. The Mayor said that arrangements had been made with the Harbour Board to talie the rubbish to sea. The method was expensive, hut so far it had been satisfactory, and would be continued till the destructor was ready for work in a few weeks. A Drainage Matter: A number of residents of London-street, Duuedin-street, and St. Mary's Road, Ponsonliy, wrote asking that- tho sewer running into St. Mary's Bay be continued to low water, as it was most offensive in its present state, and dangerous to:health, Referred to the Streets Committee./Proposed Change of Name: Mr. Parr,presented a petition from a number 1 of-.rate-payers, asking that the name of Ahcrcroiu-bie-street be changed to St. Paul's Avenufc. Referred to the Streets Committee.-' Library Assistant: Forty applications were received for the position of library assistant,-, and tho applications were deferred for .consideration by the Library Committee, Which' will be chosen at the next meeting of the Council. . , • - , <~ - r Streets Committee: The following recommendations of the Streets Committee were adopted:—That a retaining stone wall b» erected at Market Square at • a cost of £75; that ill© letter from the Auckland Electric Tramways Company, Limited, re supply of electricity, be deferred for the new Council's consideration: request for formation of footpath and provision for storm water at corner of Wellington and Hepburn Streets be acceded to; that the traffic inspector take action, under the Police Ofi'euoes Aet. if necessary, in regard to the obstruction of traflio in front of the Sunday-school Union's premises in Queen-street; that the formation of footpath. Richmond Road, be done at a cost of £10; that lamps be erected in Bath and Avon Streets; that water mains be laid from Liverpool-street to Mount-street, at a cost for labour of £40, the pipes, valued at £100, being in stock; that the Tramways Company be granted permission to attach l£in meter to portion of water pipes in Ponsonby barn, leaving the large pipes for tire service only, the fire service valves to be secured in the usual manner; that J. McLean and Sons' tender be accepted, at £3614- ss, for George's tunnel contract; that- the city engineer have authority to spaul, metal, kerb, and channel a portion of Vermont-street, at a cost of £140; that tenders be invited for lodge tor Western Park.

Finance and Legal Committee; The following clauses in the report of the Finance and Legal Committee were adopted:—That the upper portion of the windowsashes at the Waikumetc mortuary chapel be made to open, at a cost of £4 or £5: that Messrs. Buttle Bros., who asked if Council is prepared to treat for the sale of certain sections of land at junction of Grey and Queen Streets, held as a Town Hall site be informed (hat the Council has no power to sell, and suggests, if they so desire, they make application for a lease.
