POLICE COURT NEWS. Saturday's sitting of the Police Court was held before Mr. 11. S. Wardell, B.M. Drunkenness: Three first offenders wero convicted and discharged on paying the cabhire. Two others were fined 10s and costs, or. in default, 24 hours' imprisonment. David F. Ferguson was fined 10s and costs, or, in default, 24 hours' imprisonment, for a second offence. Charge Withdrawn: A charge against Ernest Towers of forging a cheque on the National Bank of New Zealand was withdrawn on the application of Detective Henderson, as the complainant was unable to identify Towers. A Prohibited Person: David Slellis was fined 10s and costs for being found on the premises of the Newmarket Hotel during the currency of a prohibition order. Constable Assaulted: Michael O'Brien pleaded guilty to a charge of assaulting Constable Francis Maekie while in the execution of his duty. Constable Mankle said he was arresting a man, when accused came tip and struck him. He let the other prisoner go and arrested the accused. The accused said he did not remember anything about the assault, as he had taken so much drink. One month's imprisonment, was imposed. Disorderly: Thomas Calloway pleaded not guilty to chargcs of refusing to leave the Captain Cook Hotel and with resisting Constable Lipscombe while he was arresting him. Evidence was given to the effect that prisoner would not leave the bar, but kept making a noise. He was requested to leave, but would not do so. Accused said it was a mistake, and that he had not made a row. The Bench fitted accused 40s, or, in default, seven days, for refusing to leave the hotel. For resisting arrest lie was fined 60s, or, in default, seven days' imprisonment. Assault: Stipau Raain, a foreigner, was charged with assaulting Eliza Draeevae, and with wilfully breaking a pane of glass, value ss, the property of Eliza Dracevae, on March 16. The accused pleaded guilty. On the first charge the accused was fined 10s and costs, 37s 6d, and on the other charge §s and costs.
