March 7. | J ,v Government Gazette it i« notified that the Rarotonga Island Council on and after .March 31. 1905. shall consist of LieutenantColonel Gudgeon, C.M.G., Resident Commissioner, member and president members, Makea-ariki, Tincmana-ariki, Pa-ariki. Kari-ka-ariki. and Kainuku-ariki, also one member to be. elected for each district of Avarna. Aroraugi, and Takitnniu. The election for members is to be held on or before April 29. 1905. in the same Gazette is published a similar notice, constituting the Island Council for Aitutaki, under the presidency of Mr. John C. Cameron, resident agent, also for Manguia and Atiu. It is also announced that the main roads round the islands of the group, including Rarotonga, are now under Government control. A marriage in high native life was celebrated at Avarna, Rarotonga, on February 15, the contracting parties being Miss Edith l'oii and Mr. Tan fa Tenai, a Government official from Tahiti. Both bride and bridegroom being close relations of the Makes family, the. usual festivities and giving of presents took place- at. the palace grounds <>f Makea-ariki. About 50 pigs wore roasted, and thousands of yards of print ami calico were given awav. The cash presented came to the sum of £19. The happy couple left by the Taviutii for Tahiti, which will be their home.
