NOTHING UNDER THREEPENCE.
Bronze coins to the value of £100, have, as the result of Sir Lewis Michelle advice, been circulated for a start, in Salisbury, Rhodesia. The experiment, however, does not meet with popular approbation. Shop- ! keepers arid merchants, preferring the j " tickey," or threcpennybit, as the lowest coin, join in expressing disgust at the in- ] troduction of the despised penny and half- ; penny, and some interesting sequels may oc- ; cur when natives enter the store for a " ha'- i porth" or "penn'orth." The newspapers I condemn the new coins as ponderous, un- • sanitary and unnecessary; one print argues that they "spell smaller prices, smaller profits, and reduced circulation of money, and rob the country, in a sense, of its attraction for capitalists." At Victoria the district surgeon has, it is stated, ordered a stock of disinfectants so as to be ready to cope with any outbreak of infectious disease that may be caused by the copper zo'ws % >
