AUCKLAND LICENSING COMMITTEE.
The quarterly meeting of tlio Auckland City Licensing Committee was held yesterday. Mr. 11. S. Wardcll, S.M., presided, and there were also present: Messrs, Graves Aickin, M. Casey, and I*. Cheal.
Transfers: The following transfers were granted:-—Anchor Hotel, A. .1. Tapper to James Thomas Grey; Grand Hotel, Tiios. Martin to James llolleston; Star Hotel, Karangaliape lload, James iUeLeod to Win. T. Watts; Clarendon Hotel, P. Quinlan to William Lynch; Thistle Hotel, Charles Simich to IJ.1 J . Quinlun; Imperial Hotel, executors of Alary Jane I'earcc (deceased) to Tlios. H. I'earce; Robert Burns Hotel, Alice Stone to Albert J. Stephenson. verier Hotel: The committee considered ii report by Constable Moriuty on the Grosvenor Hotel. The constable stated that on Deccirtbcr 22 last he called at the hotel and found five men there, two of whom lie described as convicted thieves, two as reputed thieves, and one us a prohibited person. Some of them were more or less under the influence of liquor. One man passed an insulting remark to the constable. On the following day tlio constable returned and found some of tho same men present. Mr. Scludtze, the licensee, then said he had ordered them not to come back, and given his (servants instructions not to serve them. Mr. Bauine (instructed by Messrs. Russell and Campbell) appeared for Mr. Schultze, and stated that Mr. Schultze did not know the character of the men. Mr. Schultze had been a. hotelkeeper for a great number of years, and had not a, single mark against him. Sub-Inspector Black said the report before the committee was dated December 22, but since then the police had been instructed to keep a watch on the house, and two reports had been sent in. Mr. Baurne said ho had not heard of these reports, and after some discussion Mr. Warded ruled that the committc© could not deal with matters outside the report, a copy of which had been furnished to the licensee. It was then agreed to adjourn the matter for a fortnight to enable the police to furnish the licensee with copies of the later reports referred to by Sub-Inspector Black. Freeman's Hotel: A . police report on Freeman's Hotel stated that since last meeting there had been a great improvement in the conduct of the hotel. The committee expressed satisfaction with the report.
