THE SAILORS' HOME.

PROPOSED NEW BUILDINGS' CONTRACT FINALLY APPROVED. : A srKor.u.; meeting of the council of the Auckland Sailors' Homo ■ was held '•'at the home last night to consider the proposal for the enlargement of the home. Mr. Peake,' chairman, presided, and there were also present: Messrs. Ncrheny, Coleman, Oresham. Higgins, and Potter. The chairman explained that it had been left to the council to decide whether any modification of the plans was to be made before proceeding to carry out the work, for which a tender at £1745 had been accepted. 1 Before the tender was sent in the committee went round the building, and inquired thoroughly into the possibility of curtailing the work. It was.then decided that in lieu of the proposed new kitchen the present missioned room, and the baggage-room, forming a leanto at the rear of the social hail, should be , converted into a kitchen. Some alterations would have to be made, but by this scheme a saving was effected. After letting the. contract a few members of the council went into the matter again with the architect, and they came to the conclusion that it was not desirable to reduce the amount of work, no scope being left for reduction without impairing the utility of the whole building. He moved, " That the council approve of the work being carried out at the contract price, £1745, there being no modification necessary." This was seconded by Mr. Gresham, and carried unanimously. The addition to the building is to be along the Albert-street frontage, filling the space between the present building and the Mission Hall. It will be in two storeys, and will provide an additional 25 rooms for the home.
