LIFEBOAT SERVICE FOR WELLINGTON.
[BY TI•I.E CP. A It. — J'II ESS ASSOCIATION'.] Wei.i.i noton, Monday. 1 A I'rni.ir meeting was held to-night to consider the question of establishing a lifeboat service at or near Wellington Heads. There J was a great crowd in attendance. The | Mayor presided, and Sir J. Ward was pre- ; sent and made a short speech. It. was stated during the evening that the purchase of a I boat would cost £1100, and that the OoI vernment would provide a boat house. The meeting passed the following resolution: — "That this meeting, having heard an expression of ideas concerning the establishment of a lifeboat in or near Wellington Harbour, is of opinion that steps should be taken, as soon as possible to secure such a lifeboat and station, for the benefit of those in peril on he sea." Subsequently the que lion of the manner in which the entrance to (he harbour is lighted was brought forward, and the irslallation of a low light under i'enearrow Heads was advocated. A motion was carried urging the necessity of a better light for the guidance of shipmasters.
