The annual town and country match was pUyed on September 2 in the upper room of. the Athemmim- Hall, .Melbourne, a very largo assemblage being present. Sir Samuel Gillott, the president of the Victorian Draughts Association, in opening the proceedings, announced that there were 140 players taking part in the match, and he was glad to hear that ■ every district in Victoria was represented, and he was sure the contest would be of a most friendly nature. Mr. P. Salmon was unanimously elected captain of the town players, and Mr. Irvine, as usual,, captained-his country friends." Mr. Thos. Best, the Victorian champion, was elected umpire of the match. White wins. ■ On August 30 Mr. J. A. Lucas paid a visit to the Working Men's Beading' Boom, Port Chalmers, and gave an' exhibition of simultaneous play. He prosed himself ■ quit®., an expert at thin style of play. '-For rather moire than two hours he promenaded iri front of the "row (if'• boards, behind which sat Port Chalmers* strongest team, with the single exception of Mr. H. Montgomery, who towards the close.was an Onlooker. A match between H. Morrall, English; champion, and E. Atwell, champion of. London, was played at the Park Cafe, Liverpool, on Bank Holiday,; and attracted a number of experts ;to • the spot.-; The players were introduced to the assembly .by Mr. Prank Dunne, the referee, who read over the arti-1 cles of agreement, the principal points of which were that the' match was to - consist" of 10 games, " Two Move" balloted openings, played under a time limit of 30 moves in 30 minutes, - for 'a stake of £10.
