Sept. 19 FRUIT AND PRODUCE MABKETS. ■ About the average amount of business is reported in the local fruit end produoe markets during the past week. In farm produce there has been a marked improvement in the price of potatoes, owing to the higher values being asked by Canterbury farmers, an advance of 6s per ' ton taking, place locally. For early seed varieties the demand is practically nil, and there are but few inquiries for Derwent seed. A fair amount of new potatoes are expected to be on the market within the next three weeks. Owing to the advance of over 100 per cent, taking place in Melbourne, the value of onions locally has advanced equally. In grain, fowl wheat was the only lino which showed an upward movement. Southern chaff is in full supply, and, being heavily stocked, the market is, if Anything, weaker. "Vegetables of most varieties were in full supply. Although there was no great increase in the supply of farmers' butter, the demand waa not so strong as last week, and lower prices were averaged. There was, however, a scarcity of lines suitable for bakers" use. Eggs were in demand equal, if not beyond, supply. The market for cheese was dull, and prices ruled low. Bacon and hams were in heavy supply to only a moderate demand at further reduced values. The fruit market was fully supplied from all quarters, and prices generally averaged much lower than in former seasons at. this time of the year. The Manapouri landed a good cargo of both orangesand bananas from Tonga on Thursday in good order and to a bare market for these particular lines. The whole of the consignment is being firmly held by consignees. The poultry market was left very bare, and the high prices lately ' ruling have not had the effect of bringing forward increased supplies, and prices averaged even higher than last week. Young pigs were penned in moderate quantities, yet the demand was not equal to that of former years, owing to the milk supply being later this season than usual.
