NEW ORGAN FOR ST. ANDREW'S.
GENEROUS GIFT BY MB. ANDREW, CARNEGIE.
News was received by Mr, W. Culpan by the last 'Frisco mail to the effect that Mr. . Andrew Carnegie (the Scotch millionaire) had agreed to present £300 on certain conditions towards a new organ for the old pioneer Presbyterian Church of St. Andrew's, Alton Road. Special reference to the gift is made in the Glasgow Herald or July 8 last, which speaks of the pioneer work done by this church and congregition, and mentions in connection with itthe names of the Rev. Dr. Bruce (now of Sydney) and the late W. S. and Walter Grahame, so long connected with St. Andrew's, and well known in, Glasgow; a ] s (, to the gift of a hell (a duplicate of the one in the Glasgow Cathedral) by its oldest Imfy member—Mrs. Somervell—a native of Q)jj. gow. St. Andrew's congregation feel deeply grateful to Mr. Carnegie for his handsome gift, and, we understand, intend shortly to erect a. new organ at a cost or between £600 and £700. While Mr. Culpan (the organist of the church) was in Scotland last year he noticed very fine organs in many of the churches, and found they were there largely through the generosity of Mr. Carnegie. When visiting Rothesay, he saw two very fine organs—one in the United Free, am* the other in the Established Church of Scotland, which had just been built at a cost of about £600 each, and to these Mr. Carnegie had contributed half the cost. The idea or making an application on behalf of St. Andrew's occurred to him, and this was done by the church, on his return to Auckland. Mr. .John Hastie, lor some time in Auckland, and a member of St. Andrew's, acted in Glasgow on its behalf, and the excellent result of the application for a share of Mr. Carnegie's liberality is largely due to him.'. ■■■'-'"
