The conference of delegates of the suburban local bodies, which was set up about two months ago for the purpose of dealing with the question of the disposal of nightsoil ar.d other matters of common imprest, held its second meeting last evening at, the Grey Lynn Council Chambers. The Mayor of Grey Lynn (Mr. J. Farrell) presided, and there were also present: Messrs. S. Thomas, G. Baildon (Grey Lynn), J. Fitt (Mayor of Parnell), F. Bennett (Mayor of Newmarket), H. Kinder (Newmarket), J. H. Harrison (Mount Albert Road Board), and T. Grainger (Epsom Road Board). Street Lighting: The Chairman stated that a committee appointed from the conference had waited upon the Gas Company m regard to the question of a reduction in the price at present charged for the supply of gas for street lighting. The company had intimated that the request would be favourably considered, but up to the present no definite reply had been received. It was resolved to salt'for a definite reply. Mr. Butcher, the representative of the Kitson light, was present, and gave an explanation of the terms on which his company would instal lamps for street lighting. It was decided to ask the company to erect an experimental lamp. Nightsoil Disposal: The matter of a site for a nightsoil depot for the various suburbs was then discussed. A letter was read from Dr. Frengley, District Health Officer, stating that he was not in favour of water carriage, and that he considered removal by rail to be? the best system. He said that a site along the Waikato* line could not be thought of, as the present train services would not be convenient, and a special train would probably be necessitated. He had inspected a number of proposed sites in the vicinity of the Kaipara railway, and lie thought a site might be obtained near New Lynn, Waikumete, or Henderson. Ah offer for a site on. the upper reaches of the harbour, opposite Cox's Creek, was received. It was resolved that a visit to the various sites suggested be made by the committee already appointed, and that a report be submitted to a future meeting of the conference. Street Watering: The question of street watering and the responsibility of the Tramways Company in the matter was introduced by a letter from the Newmarket Borough Council, and after a short discussion it was decided that the committee of the conference wait upon the Tramways Company with a view to arriving at an understanding on the subject. Tramway Licenses: The Chairman referred to the que-stion of endeavouring to obtain a proportion of the license fees at present paid to the City Council by the Tramways Company, which was under discussion at Monday's meeting of the Grey Lynn Borough Council. It was stated that the question would be. brought before the various bodies interested.
