Sproul, of the Oceanic Steamship Company, is at present in Wellington, to meet Mr. D. 0. Ramsay, the company's manager at Sydney, who arrived by the Monowai yesterday. Mi. John Smith, of the head office of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, is about to be promoted to the position "of accountant-of the company's branch at Hamilton. The friends of Miss Bree, school teacher at Matamata, have presented her with a purse of sovereigns, in wcognrtoon of the services she has 'rendered at musical entertainments in the district. A Woodville Press Association telegram states that Alee Anderson, a boy of eight, was presented with a Royal Humane Society's certificate by the Mayor for a gallant attempt to rescue' a younger brother from drowning. - , A Press Association telegram from Wellington states that the vacancy in the hemp division of the Department of Agriculture, caused by the resignation of Mr. R. T. Bell, has been filled by the appointment of Mr. C. A. D. Hawkins, recently of Manawatu. Mr. Francis, who is relinquishing the position of Weslevan home missionary in the Huntlv district to take up similar work in New Guinea, was, prior to taking his departure from the district, th© recipient of a. handsome wallet and a purse of sovereigns as a token of esteem. • Just prior to the meeting of the Oity Council this evening, an opportunity will be taken by His Worship the Mayor to present long-service medals to Lieutenant Cave and Gunners Reed, Wilson, and Fitzgerald, all being members of the Auckland Naval Artillery. The occasion was taken at the anniversary celebrations held at the Tabernacle last evening, to present to Mr. A. J. Hall, choirmaster, a pnrse of sovereigns, in recognition of that gentleman's services to the choir for the past seven years.; The presentation ■was made bv Mr. J. C. Spedding, on behalf of the members of the church and the choir. It is the iatention of Sir William Russell the member for Hawke's Bay, to leave on a visit to the Old Country after the present session of Parliament. Sir Wm. Russell has business in England requiring his personal attention. It is seven years since he was last in England. He hopes to return to the colony in time for the next session of Parliament. Mr. Percy Isaac, late licensee of the Royal Hotel, Auckland, was last night presented •nth a handsome gold watch, suitably inscribed, together with an address, by a few boarders and friends, on the occasion of his relinquishing the management of the hotel.
