A cable to the New York World from Domodossola says:—The first construction train went through the new Simplon tunnel a few days ago. This marks the aecomplbhmpnt of one of the greatest engineering feats in'history, not so much because of the length of the tunnel, which is twelve and , one-half miles, but by reason of the enormous engineering difficulties. Hot springs, running at the rate of 500 gallons a second, and heating the tunnel to 107 degrees Fahrenheit, were the worst obstacles to, be surmounted. It was done by means of the system of canals. This new passage, which is to connect Switzerland and Northern Europe with' Italy, through Milan; under the highest mountains of the Alps, was begun towards the end of 1893, and the contracting company had signed agreements to have the work entirely finished by May 15, 1904. Notwithstanding, however, the activity and ability displayed in conducting the enterprise, the enormous engineering difficulties prevented the company from fulfilling its contract in time. The Swiss .Government extended the period for the completion of the tunnel to April -30, 1905, and agreed to pay 1J1,600.00Q more than the contract price of $14,000,000. ■•■*•" - ■ A good ' idea indeed: Tucker's Pudding i Powder will make up info any f-hape in a mould, and turn out beautifully; 4 flavours, [ 4 colours; 2 in each 6d box..
