MATAMATA ITEMS.
[from OUB own CORRESPONDENT.] A male teacher having been appointed to the charge of our district school, and there being ovei 60 children within school age in the settlement already, the parents are beginning to think that it is high time the Board of Education or the Government took some steps in regard to erecting suitable school buildings. Many of tHe settlers and residents of this and surrounding districts regard with approbation the persistent effort that is at present being made in the House of Representatives by the Leader of the Opposition and his followers to secure for Crown tenants the freehold which is so eagerly desired by all true farmers and settlers. The farmers want the freehold; that, at any rate, is the feeling in this district < i'he Piako Gun Club held its first practice match at Waharoa on Saturday last, when some very good shooting was done, seeing that the season is only just beginning. In the evening after the match the Gun Club Committee tendered a dinner and smoke concert to upwards of a hundred visitors, members and friends, the function being a most enjoyable and successful one. The New Zealand Dairy Association's creameries at Waharoa and Gordon are now in full swing, and, for so early in the season, are receiving very good supplies of unit* . j
