On July 19 Lieutenant 0. D. Pickering, R.N.R., registrar for New Zealand, was in attendance at the Auckland Drill Hall, when several additional candidates for enrolment in the New Zealand branch of the Royal Navy and Royal Navy Reserve, presented themselves. The response, so far as Auckland is concerned, has been satisfactory, and the class of men good, though in the case of those desirous of joining the reserve a number of the applicants have been more youthful than was desired. The death of another old identity of Auckland took place on Saturday evening, in the person of Mr. J. C. MacCormick, of St. Martin's Lane, who in his earlier days was a very prominent and successful barrister in this city. Born in the Spanish West Indies the deceased went to England, where he was educated. Later ho emigrated to Australia as a young man, and secured a Government appointment in the Supreme Court in New South Wales. It was here that the late Mr. MacCormick was admitted to the Bar, and he immediately came to New Zealand, arriving in Auckland in 1865. He devoted himself assiduously to his profession till o\er< work compelled him to relinquish business about 20 years ago, and since that time he. has been more or less an invalid.
