THE GOLDFIELDS.

-OLD HAURAKI G.M. CO. £192 FROM 25 TONS. The manager' of the Old Hauraki Gold Mining Company reports as follows:— I have just finished : a small crushing of 25 , tons of ore and 3011 of rough picked stone, for a return of 640 x 3dwt retorted gold, roughly valued at £192. The general or© .', is from various parts of the mine; the picked « lone, which yielded 23ca, is mostly from No. 6 lead in the Union Beach section. The block on each side of the winze is now ,!i sloped up to the bottom of the 180 ft leraL The leading stone above the 180 ft level is taken along in all about 18ft, and is now nearing the top of the chamber above the winze. The lead is from lin'to I Sin'" thick, and when last broken ■ down showed a little gold. In the Hauraki section we are starting a small block on Legge's lode, south of the crosscut, between the 100 ft and 160 ft levels. From its position, and taking into consideration a cross lead sthat is likely 'to junction with it some 12ft lor 15ft south of where, we have started, the chances are in favour of getting, some ; payable ore in, this block. We have had quite a lot of work fixing up the shaft, putting in new bearers and yokes to sup- % port the column, and clearing away loose timber. \ However, we have now got a fair I atart below the 300 ft level.

. TAIRUA BROKEN HILLS G.M. CO. The manager of the Tairua Broken Hills Gold Mining Company's mine reports that during the past month the ore won from the fctopes on the Night lode was payable. In the, drive north this reef became small and poor. The Blucber reef in the south drive . continues to look well, whilst the stopes north and south are producing payable ore. These blocks are each 100 ft long, and should produce a large tonnage of ore. The drive north on the New Year reef is in'oOffe. f The lode in the face is poor, and it looks as though the run of gold -'north has been passed* throngn. 'No ore has been crushed from this reef yet, as the tramway is.not completed. In = prospecting at No. •v ", 2 level a nice-looking leader was found, which gives payable prospects, and shows » an assay value "of £2 7s od per ton. The leader is in nice ground, and should it keep op. its present quality will greatly increase , the vs-lue of the mine. , Six men are driving and stoping on it. The manager recommends the opening up of the nine below the present low level. This would £> v entail the purchase of an air-compressor, winding-winch, and pump. Regarding hist month's return, the manager states ti«.t it was not so good as it I should have hi en, owing to the want of cyanide,- .rhicb did not arrive in time to keep the cyanide treatment going.
