fruit AND Produce markets. In the local produce markets a fair business has been transacted during the past week. The supply of table potatoes has not been in excess of the demand, and so far as Canterbury sorts were concerned, better values ruled. Many consignments of rough Waikatos were worked off for cattle and pig feed at an" average of £2 per ton. There has been practically no business done in seed varieties, although the market la not overstocked. The only supplies of onions which came to haffcl were Victorians, for which t.he market was firmer. Grain generally was unchanged, whilst the supplies of chaff were almost entirely from the South, and j prices showed an advance of 10b per ton, with I a further expected rise at an early date. Poultry of all kinds was in very limited supply, and prices throughout ruled much higher than last week. The demand for young pigs was small. In dairy produce there was a marked falling off in the supplies. of dairy butter, and prices for auction lots were equal to and over factory quotations. There was a noticeable increase in the demand for fresh factory rolls, which are now becoming limited in supply, and are receiving preference to frozen made up. Fresh eggs did not show any great increase j in supply, and were well competed for. Cheese, | bacon, and hams were unchanged in value. The j fruit market collapsed so far as apples were concerned, the steady and continued shipments from Nelson, Wellington, and Christchurch having the effect of overstocking the market, and for many lines at auction to-day the prices ruling were from Is to 3s per case lower than last week, the result being that many lines were withdrawn. Lemons were j almost unsalable, despite the fact that the majority j sent in were of good quality. The Hnuroto arrived from Tonga on Thursday, her late arrival greatly interfering with the auction markets. The steamer brought an unusually large cargo to an overstocked and bad market, and as a further unfortunate circumstance a large percentage of the oranges were condemned.
