ATHLETIC SPORTS.

, ' »'' : FOOTBALL. . ■ ' , NEWTON V..ROTORUA."' .', \4 The match between the Newton District Club fifteen and the Rotorna representatives, which inaugurated'the.-season at Alexandra Park on Saturday, resulted in a victory for the homo team by 10 points (two tries and a ! potted goal) to nil. The game was not productive of much excitement, but occasionally ; there,,, «i;ere , individual .flashes, of brilliancy which aroused ' the. enthusiasm of the few hundred spectators present. There was a perceptible lack of combination, as well as i condition, amongst the players, but it is only, reasonable to expect this at the beginning of the reason. '^However; taking the game on the whole, and considering the greasy state of the ball and ground, a -very fair exposition of Rugby was given. ■ The Newton vanguard put in a: good deal of effective work,' and-outclassed their opponents in all departments, but any' advantage gained in that direction was nullified by the smart tactics of the visitors' backs. On several occasions passing rushes were inaugurated by Newton's backs, and would. inevitably have borne fruit had it not been for the excellent tackling and careful play of the opponents' back division. The first half of the game was fought in neutral territory almost throughout," neither team's line being seriously encroached upon. It ended without any score being registered. After the spell both teams set to work with a vigour, but Newton were the chief aggressors, and the. weight and strength of ! the forwards soon had effect. From a hard struggle in Rotorua's quarter Roberts secured the ball and crossed the line. 'The try w.is cct converted. A few minutes afterwards Eno; made an opening, and some good passing, in which "the 'backs took part, resulted in Roberts again scoring, Eaton failing to convert. Rotorua continued, to defend, and their line was, several times in jeopardy of being crossed. , Eventually G. Rowc smartly potted a goal. 'The visitors here livoned up and made bold efforts to lessen the defeat they were likely sustain, but all to no purpose, the vigorous onslaughts being admirably frustrated by the home team, , who by this 'time had demonstrated their superiority. * No further score was registered. Mr. A. Campbell held the whistle. SUBURBS V, WAIUKU. Aj Suburbs ; District Club team visited Waiuku on Saturday, and, after a good game, won by seven points to nil. Soon, after the start of the first spell Riddell kicked a splendid goal from the field against the wind, and' in the second spell L. Todd scored a try for the winners. _ This -was : converted. Waiuku had hard luck in not, scoring, in this spell, a man being thrown out of touch right on the corner flag. v Fqi- the winners Riddell, Stuokey, Todd 'and Plugs© played good games, and for the losing side V. Bamball, Herrold, Bennett, Hone,- and James were most conspicuous. Mr. Kavanagh, of ; the A.R.U., gave every satisfaction as referee. About i-oO spectators attended the match, which constitutes a record gate foi Waiu!ku. After the match both teams sat down to dinner at the" Waiuku Hotel* and in the evening a smoke concert was held.! Mr. A. Plugge occupied the chair, and the usual toasts were honoured. .The Suburbs' team, left Waiuku at half-past,ten p.m., and, as the s.s. Woka le f the wharf cheers, were given for both teams. 1 - ' ' •■'■•■■ ' ' ,
