COMMERCIAL.

New Zealand Herald Office. Thursday evening. The Stock Exchange last week gave signs of more business being done and numerous transactions in one or two stocks are recorded. Investment stock show a rather better inquiry. Bank of New Zealands are offered at £4- 15s, but buyers do not quote. Insurances have again been in fair demand, and New Zealand sold at £4 lis and £4 lis 6d, closing with sellers at £4 12s and buyers at £4 10s 6d. There are buyers' of New Zealand Accidents at £3, with no declared sellers. Mew Zealand and Rive. Plato Land Mortgage sold at £1 4s 6d and £1 ss, and there are sellers at £1 ss, and buyers at £1 4s. In coals, Hikurangis are wanted at lis 4d. There are sellers of Tauplris at 18s 9d. In gas, sellers of Auckland ask £14. Golden Belts (contributing) sold at 2s 7d; Komata Keels at Is 2d; New Eclipse at 7J>d. To like Gold Beefs sold at Is 5d and Is 6d. Since our report on Wednesday there has been no further change in the grain market. The heavy surplus of nearly all lines of grain and produce in Australia will probably prevent any inflation of values this season. It is to be noted, however, that two steamers are now loading at Sydney with produce for Japan, and if this hade increases it may help the market considerably in Australia. Even then it is questionable whether this colony will benefit wry much, and the advocates of federation with Australia will be inclined to point to this season as the first real example of loss that we shall sustain by remaining apart. The usual sales of flour are reported. Bran has apparently left the low prices that j had ruled lately, and the outside demand ! has firmed the market in the South. It is j stated that 40s is now obtainable for shipment to London from I.yttelton. against 35s freely quoted a week ago, and that the last Federal steamer took 700 sacks for London. Potatoes are almost unprocurable, and the 750 sacks by the Talnne to-day arrive to a I keen market Onions are still very scarce, here, available supplies having been cleared out for local and Island orders. The Mangapapa has brought a further shipment of maize to a full market. j

The later arrival of the Anarima, which is not now expected for another month, will cause inconvenience to those requiring cornsacks, as stocks hero are light, 49iu being quite unprocurable. The Calcutta market remains quiet, but firm, with a fair local demand and a certain amount of speculating among the native dealers.

The Indra has arrived with a large general cargo. A small lot of Champion vinegar is being landed to a bare market. Nestlc's milk is on the same vessel. A further shipment of Highlander milk arrived by the Hawea. The large cargo by this vessel is now being discharged as early as the wet weather and the indifferent position of the steamer will allow. Large consignees are not at all pleased when a vessel with a full cargo has to discharge at Hobson-street.

An improved demand has set in for dried fruits, and a few good sales have been made in currants and sultanas. Seeded raisins, both American and Australian, have also been taken up at late values. Dates are in bettei demand now that fresh fruit is getting scarce and dearer. Figs have also improved considerably during the last week or two, after being very flat since Christmas. General business has been jjuioter during the last couple of days. §J The timber trade is keeping up well, so far as export is concerned, and this is keeping mills from feeling the quieter demand for local requirements. It is interesting to note, in connection with the new line of steamers trading with the west coast of England, that a substantial shipment of timber is going to Liverpool by the Suffolk next week. This direct trade with the large centres outside of London should mean a big thing for New Zealand, as it has been repeatedly shown that butter, frozen meat, and other produce could reach a heavy demand in the provinces if it could be once taken past the London brokers, and it is the Recognition of this fact that has induced the New Zealand Government to suggest the probability of opening up shops for the sale of New Zealand meat if there is no other way of reaching the .masses of England. Visitors to England from New Zealand all agree that a big trade lias been lost for years, and the new line of steamers will provide the very opportunity that has been wanted.
