TRAMCAR ACCIDENT.
MISS CALEY BADLY INJURED. IK serious tram accident occurred in Hob-Bon-street last evening, about twenty minutes past five o'clock, tie victim being Miss Anne Jane Caley, a member of the Caley family,' four of whom were injured in the disastrous tram accident at Kingsland last Christmas Eve, one (Mr. Win. Caley) so much so that be died shortly afterwards. The unfortunate lady concerned in the accident of last evening, had just left the house of Miss Alice Rimmer, the well-known vocalist, with whom she had been staying for some little time, and was in the act' of crossing the street when she noticed an up-going car approaching, and walked slowly along the side of the down line to allow the car to pass. Evidently the noise of the car in motion prevented her hearing a down car from Archhill approach, and although Motorman Buckley sounded his gong continuously on seeing her in close proximity to the line, she did not discover its presence until it was almost on her. Miss Caley then apparently became confused and attempted to cross the line. The motorman immediately applied the emergency brake, but too late to prevent an accident, and the front of the car struck Miss Caley, hurling her with considerable force to the ground, fortunately clear of the car. The lady was picked up insensible, and carried into Mi. Gilbert's drapery establishment. Mr. Lysaght. traffic superintendent, who was quickly on the scene, telephoned for Dr. McDowell, who was soon in attendance. Dr. 'Walker, who had been summoned from the Tramways Company's Queen-street office, arriving a few minutes earlier. On a medical examination being made it was found that Miss Caley was suffering from concussion of the brain, and was much bruised about the head, iu addition to sustaining abrasions to the nose and face. As far as could be ascertained there are no injuries to the limbs, and although in her present state it is impossible to arrive at any definite conclusion, it is hoped that the unfortunate victim will recover. Mrs. Murray, of 92, Cook-street, witnessed the accident, and subsequently expressed the opinion that nothing further could have been done in the circumstances by Motorman Buckley to avert an accident.
