OBITUARY.

Ax old colonist in the person of Mr. Win. Baxter, of Waitakerci, passed away peacefully on. Sunday, death being due to heart failure, following on pleurisy. Deceased, who had reached the age of 74 years, jnine out from England to Victoria in 1852, and after 6omo year" on the goldfield. of Ben- ■ digo, he returned'tc the Mother Country. Deceased, however, did not remain very long in England, for in 1863 he arrived in Auckland in the ship Ganges. Mr.Baxtei, after spending several years on the goldfields in various parts of New Zealand, finally entered into a grocery business in Karangahape Road, 'Auckland, where be remained till the later seventies. Retiring then from that business, be embarked on fruitgrowing at Henderson, where his farm near the Nihotupu Falls became : a very popular camping-ground for picnickers to the Waitakerci Ranges. Deceased, who was held in high esteem by his many acquaintances, is survived by a widow ; and two sons, Messrs. P. and W. E. Baxter.

Mr. James Jackmau. who for the past 50 years had been a resident of Auckland, died at his home in Hepburn-street, Poneonby, on Saturday night, at the ripe old age of 88 years. Deceased, who had retired from active business for some 30 years, was in the early days identified with the coastal shipping trade. He leaves a, wife and grown-np family to" mourn their loss.
