NORTHERN WATROA METHODIST CIRCUIT.
Tiif quarterly meeting of the Northern Wairoa Methodist circuit: was held at the parsonage, Mangawhare, on Easter Monday. The Rev. J. J. Lewis prosided, and 22 brethren were present. Number of members, 127. Mr. G. French, who has removed to Otahuhu, was accorded a vote of thanks for his work as a local preacher and steward in the circuit. The balance-sheet showed an income for the quarter of £80 3s lid. and an expenditure of £63 7s 2d, reducing the debt by £16 16s 9d. The ci'iairrnan congratulated the meeting on th'j/ splendid returns for the quarter. Mr. Simons reported that Aratapu anniversary had been a great success, the trust fund benefiting by £14. The auditor's report revealed a discrepancy of £18 2s 2d, and a liability ol £5 to the Rev. Rotlnvell.. This was reduced by various payments, and the meeting finally decided to add to tho balance-sli'j-'t a liability of £14 13s lid, still to be accounted for. The Rev. G. Frost reported the completion of the parsonage improvement scheme, involving a cash expenditure of over £26. A special vote of thanks was accorded him for collecting all the money, and thus securing for the circuit a serviceable stable and other accessories. Mr. Trounson was thanked for his gift of timber, valued at £15. The Rev. G. Frost was heartily thanked for his good work in the circuit, several of the brethren speaking very highly of his pulpit gifts, and expressing good wishes for his future. At the Mangawhare anniversary concert on Tuesday evening the Rev. G. Frost was presented with a gentleman's travelling companion, and Mrs. Frost with a silver-mounted biscuit barrel, by the Mangawhare congregation. ST. JOHN'S LITERARY SOCIETY. The literary and musical society in connection with St. John's Church, Ponsonby, held its opening meeting last night. There was a good attendance of members, and Mrs. Thome (vice-president) presided in the absence ot the Rev. ,T. A. Luxford (president). A very interesting programme of musical itemr. was submitted, the performers including:—Mis? Addington (recitation). Miss Pull (piano solo), Misses Tonkin, Edwards. Bouskill and f.emmon (songs), Mr. G. Higgott (song), Mr. Talkington (rending), and Miss Mortimer and Messrs. White and Britton (trio). Mr. Wiseman acted as accompanist. Mr. Mortimer read an excellently-written paper on the benefits and advantages of p literary society.
