THE MAYOR'S PROCLAMATION.
TO THE EDITOR. ■Sir,— was surprised to read the terms b! the above ; the Mayor knows quite well that ' the wholesale, houses and shops that close on Saturday do not '-propose to adopli Thursday m lieu thereof., We have a superabundance of holidays', without adding more. ! Let. the various.nationalities comprising our Empire observe their various national holidays if they wish, but that is no reason for tho suspension of business. .",-.■ I do not think the in-< spector of factories has any power to consent to a change of day; he may decline to pro. secute for a breach of the law. The Bid of last session proposed giving the Mayor power to substitute another day, but it was strongly objected -to, and is not law yet.-—I am etc ' X."' : TO THE EDITOR. ".': . _ Sir,— your issue to-day our worthy Mayor invites the shopkeepers to close on Thursday in place of Wednesday, because it is St Patrick's Day. I have no feeling of antipathy either to St. Patrick or our Roman Catholic friends, but as a citizen I do object strongly to the invidious preference shown to anything connected with the Church of Rome on all' occasions. Did our Mayor ask the shopkeepers to close on : St. George's Day or St. Andrew's Day, or on St. Bartholomew's Day? It L quite time our Roman Catholic friends learned that the patience of the long-suffering Protestant is well-nigh exhausted; a little more bend of the- bow and' it will break.—l am, etc., > * ,i , ,r , .S. L - P. itanfcii Auckland, March 15. * TO THE EDITOR. ' Sir, — cannot see any good reaswn why our worthy Mayor should call upon the' Wednesday closing shopkeepers to close on Thursday this week instead. If a, certain section of the community see fit to make March 1? a holiday, why should-the closing day be altered any more than St. Andrew's, St. George's or Saint Guy Fawkes' bo made general holidays? The country folk are perplexed enough at present as to closing days. And what'has Mr. Ferguson to do with the alteration? Why should we not make a general holiday on July 4, and, for that matter every saint's day on the calendar?—lam, etc.' "__ - ~ F. E. Herbert. '' . Karaagahape Road. :
