COMMERCIAL.

NeW ZfeteAND Heeaid om*e. v'c ;.:'".'■ " : .:;;'; Tuesday^eveiJiflg.,'. : : Since last mail left there, has been & fair; amount- of business put through, with very little of a startling character. Wheat has been tha mlbjeefc of much speculation, but with none, of the excitement that ' Was so evident on the other side of the world. [ With the pirbcipeci; of d rise, farmers in the : Smith kept back their grain, and this forced I millets for a tittle to buy at 3s 3d waysido ' Statibris, and sales for shipment were im- ; possible under 3s 5d f.o.b. During last week, however, this value disappeared, and offers : became fairly plentiful at 3s 3d f.o.b. Even now this appears above the shipping price of Australian, so that if the harvest turns out as expected, arid there is an exportable surplus, millers may eventually be able to buy at a shad»lo.wer. It ia rather to bo regretted that the dmciai statistics fee'SO far behind as regards time of issue, much of the value of the information being lost when a return makes its appearance with all tiio figures made up to several months before. People are by this fcipt in the' '.dark, v<*ry often as to the real position until, it is too late for thbhl.to'act op the information. :' Oats have also been taken up rsthoi largely with the idea of a rise in value, but nothing has resulted beyond the natural hardening that followed tills buying. South African .demand is pbor, aiid jjoadou , demands toe not sufficient to Warrant anything aboVe present values. ,7 : Sates of B grade are' msiio locally at IS lid to 2S id ex Wharf, according to quantity,■■.while lo#ei descriptions .are Offered at a penny to twopence Under these figures. The firtftßess id. thfe auirket during the last few \veeks lists caused, an advance of 80s per ton iri Southern . oatmeal; which is ndW Abated at 10s i.o.b. Sbtitherit pbtW. ; . ■'■.-Maize has ease'd of! considerably' during the' .-. hist itiHai§ui' and. the. he&#*, arrivals ; have Caused the' mafkbfc td decline haii ,#<iek to 3d e* wharf id wholesale! lines. There was. really nothing to warrant the higher values of the last month,.or two, .beyond, the fact that growers WerO determined to pratpoie sending up their grain. , It has to come shine time, and those" id the 'trade- Saw all along that as soon as a reasonable quantity Came up, enough per week to move the crop id tWelve months, the price must inevitably fall. ■■,''"-■. v. V, i ■ ■' iJ ■ THe. flax liiafket keepa fairly steady,- and the weaker tone in London Is hot fully refleeted here, buying for export being too keen for the price to drop much. The same competition for getting supplies has induced .such' a high value far the.lower grades that it is i Sally questioiiabie whether it pay's the miller to dd.tho extra stripping and dressing, with consequent loss in weight, necessary for his flax to pass in a higher grade, and this no doubt accounts for..the larger 'quantity of, f.a.q. offering on the market, as against, g.f.a.q. and fine. v , t J ' Tho timber mills arc busy with export arid local demand. Severe easterly weather at the beginning of the month' interfered rather seriously With tho rafting of logs to the city mills'/- Satisfactory progress is Bftlng 'tfUdo with the rftilWay loi.&M Taupo Totara Timber Company, £ private lib© of about 5' milos joining the Government railway at Ptitarurii, a line which will tap an enormous forest. It is how thought probable that much of the timber on the Main Trunk line may bo Seated down the Wanganui.River, instead of beiag sent by rail. , . With regard to the Wanganui River it :S SatiSfiiotbrf to know that the expectations of this as a toUiriSt route have beeii ftiliy realised, and reguki- tripS have been run during tho summer from Taumarunui, tho present terminus on the Auckland end of the Main Trunk lite. The private firm who run the steamers on this, tne New Zealand Rhine, are now erecting a house-boat, sd that tourists who wish next year to do the trip up stream, taking two days from Pipiriki, will be able to rest overnight at. a comfortable floating ; accommodation-house, and continue the journey next day. During this season it has been necessary to confine th<* route to a doivh-stream trip, which can be abcbfaipiislied from : Taumaruhili to Pipiriki fii a day, the remaining' trip to Wanganuj being made next morning. A very important alteration is necessary at the Wanganui end before this, trip can be useful for those who are pushed for time, vis?., that the river steamer should arrive early enough at Waj nganui to catch the ,; Wellington express, and also the New Plymouth express. At present it jdst misses the train by an hour or two, and some travellers who were pressed for timd were disappointed at the seeniing unnecessary dslay, easily avoidable, either bystarting the steamer earlier or running faster. The next item on this tourist route will bd the placing of fast steamers on the Waikato River, so that tho journey would be almost continuous by Water from Auckland to Wanganui. Unfortunately we have not at tlu> end an enterprising private firm who are prepared to ignore all difficulties and stand all kinds of losses in thoir determination to open a tourist route, but such a stream of water, running lengthways with the island, cannot be expected to waste for ever. In the South Island all the rivers run across the island, and it is certainly unique that in a small island like the North Island, two Such magnificent rivers should be navigable and run in Hid very places most suitable aS a tourist route. :■• 't Tho gold returns continue to b% SatisfaOi tory, and the necessary work contribute* largely to tho earning power of a large population in this province. There are signsof stringency id the money market. 'Thi§ has been expected for some time, but the good values obtainable for our staple pro* ducts have tided it over. Wool is a little ; easier for most of the qualities that are produced here, a slight fall having unfortunately taken place in ,th* lower grades. , . The butter production is still increasing, and the financial year, ending March 31, will add nearly a quarter of a million sterling to the value produced during the previous twelve months. - ) In the import market there has been some speculation in Easterr goods, owing tb the possibility of Supplies being cut off. For the present it seems assured that Japan can keep the ocean clear for shipments to continuewith regularity, and the value of rice, the principal item affected, has eased off from the position of speculation. What will happen when General Kuropatkin occupies Tokio remains to be seen, but the Japanese will probably have something to say before that excursion takes place. Rice went up to £18, and some even asked higher, but it did not touch the extraordinary prices quoted in the South. Sago and tapioca are a little firmer at £12 and" £12 10s respectively. Cornsacks are v»ry scarce, and the few 48* inch here are now held for 6s 3d, While 44inch command 6a. Kerosene remains at IOJd ex store for American oil, while wholesale lines by the lons-expected Thornliebank are quoted at a halfpenny less. Turpentine has seen rather violent fluctuations, but is now quoted at 4s Gd wholesale. Dried fruits are almost a negligible quantity, owing to the abundant supplies of fresh fruit. American canned fruits are also rather quiet, but fair sales of Singapore pineapples two being made. STOOjv. AND SHAREMARKET. * Business on the Stock Exchange shows little or no improvement. Investors are disinclined to speculate, although in many cases prices seem attractive, and Will return a gobd rate of interest upon the investment. KAURI GUM MARKET. v As fairly fine weather continues, (turn' is I still arriving very freely. The tiufcbtity to hand since last mail left has been about 840 ! tons. Of this- tho great bulk has been of j very inferior quality, and (rood ,gum continues ! to bo as scarce" as ever. Tho demand is irre- | gular, and the market generally too dis- : organised to admit ot useful quotations being given. For poor kinds generally the demand is still good, though the supply is so large- that buyers do not seem so eager to purchase as they were a slidrfc tiniaafo; still ail that comes in is absorbed writhout much delay. There. have been some transactions in better gums at fail prices, but for these kinds the inquiry is still very limited, and most arrivals are held oft" the market in the hone that the demand may shortly recover. As remarked above, the supply of good gum is very short, and any little additional inquiry would quickly affect values;AUCTION SALES, ETC. ■ ■ March 4. At Mr. Thornes' land salts by auction today the following lots found buyers:—Twenty acres land at Ellorslie. with cottage, milkingsheds, etc., brought £1500; and an allotment having; 99ft to Amy-street 30s per foot. .
