Tim plant, as already known, is being removed from Opitonui. The sinking of the main shaft is proceeding very satisfactorily, and a depth of about 700 ft below the. collar has now been attained. The Nos. 2 and 3 levels ate also being extended as usual, the . face of the former being' carried along the apex of the lode. In the latter a very nice channel of country is being penetrated. Crushing operations haVe been resumed at the Waitekauri Gold Mining Company's mill, it having been decided to crush about 1000 tons of ore from the old Waitekauri mine. Prospecting and boring operations are proceeding expeditiously tit the Cross section, about 40 iiieh having been pub on since the holidays. • . . , None of the tenders received for the Woodstock Gold Mining Company's mine and plant Were accepted, and negotiations for the private sale of the property are proceeding. The New Zealand Crown Mines Company have recently discharged a number of hands in order to cut down expenses. . . . . The 29th anniversary of the opening of the Ohinemuri district as a goldfleld occurred oh March 3. • The shareholders in. th& Maratotp Gold Mining Company agreed at a meeting held on March 7 to the voluntary winding up of the company. The main reason for this action was a report by the chairman of directors, which stated that the whole country in the mixle was so impregnated with calcite that it would not pay a company. They had had encouraging assays, but the veins were too small. , tr ... A meeting of shareholders iii the ?\ ami South Gold Mining Company was held on March 8, when a resolution, passed on February 19, "That the company be wound-up, and a new company registered under the same name/' was confirmed. It is contemplated to go in for ft boring scheme, but as only 2d per share retrained Uncalled, which would yield only about £1100, it* has been decided to form a new •company, with a. liability of Is 6d per share. . With reference to boring Operations at the Thames the first hole put down for the Kura-nui-Caledonian Company has had to be abandoned owing to the difficulties met With,, and a new one has been commenced 4ft away from, it. A borehole has been commenced m the public's ground up the Moanataiari Creek, and reaming operations are proceeding m the Victoria Company's borehole. . * At the extraordinary general meeting of shareholders in the Golden Belt Gold Mming Company (Tairua), held on March 4, resolutions were adopted providing for the increase of the company's capital to £20,000 by the creation of 000 additional ordinary shares of 2s each, to be offered in the first instance to shareholders at Is premium. J.he chairman (the Hon. E. Mitchelson) m moving the resolutions, stated that the increased capital was purposed to be used for the purchase'of an additional 20-head of stamps; making the company's crushing power 40 head iti all. , „ ■ ■ , . Since the directors of the New Chelmsford Gold Mining Company have had a man prospecting the property, two reefs have been discovered, each carrying gold; The No. 2 reef is a compact body of stone, and was .cut in a trench about 20ft south of the stapes, where the reef appeared to have been cut off. A third leader. of about 3in has also been cut, which looks a well-defined leader, and is showing gold. The board have authorised four men being employed to develop the reefs referred to,, preparatory to more permanent work. The first annual report Of the directors of the Old Hauraki Geld Mining Company, issued recently, stated that upon the formation of the company steps Were at once taken to commence work. Mr. John Goldsworthy was appointed mine manager, and had Carried on operations to the entire Satisfaction, of the board, and with some degree of success, inasmuch as Legge's lode northward of the slide was intersected, and was productive of good ore at both ■ the 100 ft and 160 ft levels, the yield therefrom enabling the directors to declare a* dividend of threepence per share in October last. After considerable negotiations, arrangements were made to take over the pumping machinery erected by the Bunker's Hill Gold Mining Company, in accordance with their agreement with the English Company, and to carry on the unwatering of the ground. ! Since then the Water has been lowered to the 220 ft level. The financial statement showed receipts for the past half-year amounting to £4912 12s sd, of which £4383 163 6d represented value Of bullion won. Expenditure for the same period totalled £4866 9s 9d, leaving a credit balance at January 31 last of £46 2s Bd. Amongst the items disbursed the dividend absorbed £1260. Operations in the ttauraki No. 2 Gold Mining Company's mine having disclosed nothing of value, application is being made for six months' protection. The New Four-in-Hand Gold Mining Company ate getting very encouraging prospects from a winze being sunk on the Tainui leader. The new owner of 'the Kapowai mine, Gumtown, is spending a considerable sum upon improving the means oi transporting ore from the mine to the battery. He is having a ground tram laid and other improvements effected, which will reduce the cost of handling the ore. Work in the mine is proceeding, and ore of a payable grade is coming to hand. Gold is visible in some of the stone broken out recently. THE GOLD KETUKNS.
