AUCKLAND'S BATHING FACILITIES.

PROGRESSIVE MOVEMENT IN DEVONPORT.

The lack of bathing facilities in the Borough of Devonporfc, which was the subject of a recent article in the New Zealand Herald, was brought up before last night's meeting of the local Borough Council by Mr. 0. C. Dacre, who moved, in accordance with notice of motion, "That the Council do now erect suitable saltwater baths, for the district."

i :In proposing .his motion, >< Mr. Dacre said he. thought the time had now arrived when something should be done, as the baths which they had were a disgrace to the borough. The cry had been raised that they had no money to do it with, but that was the same thing that had been said in regard to the drainage scheme. They had managed to borrow money for that, and they could borrow it for the baths, too. He felt sure that as soon as the baths were erected they would be a great attraction for visitors to the "Shore." There was the question of the site to be taken into consideration, too, but they could settle that later on.

Mr. J. A. Walker thought, that it was rather a big ordei to rush through all at once, as it involved an expenditure of some three to four thousand pounds. For his own part he could not see, when the baths were erected, how they were going to maintain them. The revenue which would be derived would certainly not do it. ... On the Mayor's suggestion Mr. D acre decided to alter*his motion as follows: "That the Council take into consideration the question of providing suitable saltwater baths'for the district, and the Works Committee be instructed to draw up a report upon the matter recommending a site, etc." This was seconded, and the resolution was, without further discussion, carried unani- ■ mously. : ______
