THE DEVONPORT WATER SUPPLY.

RECOMMENDATIONS BY MR. ■ : ; ■ . METCALFE, C.E. Ax a special meeting ...' of the Devonport Borough Council, , held a week ago, to consider matters affecting the local water supply, it was resolved to" ask Mr. Metcalfe, C.E., to report upon and give an estimate of the cost of the proposal to give an output of 25,000 gallons per houi through the borough's Bin mains. This report came up before last night's, meeting of the Borough Council, the Mayor (Mr. E. w/ Alison, M.H.R.), presiding.: - ' »..- : '■■'

Before reading the report Mr. Alison mentioned'that he had received letters from the Kauri Freehold Gold Estates, Limited,, and from Mr. A. R. Hisiop, of Wellington, offering boilers and pumps, which were likely to suit, for sale to the Council. The firstnamed had in their possession a Dow pump capable of handling 800 gallons per minute, and of raising water 700 ft, and this they could let them have for £700, f.o.b. scow at Whangapoua. The boiler which they offered was built by Seager Bros., and its .price was £550, also f.o.b. scow at Whangapoua. In respect'to Mr. Hislop's communication it seemed that he had a " Worthington pump " for sale, which the writer said was originally bought for £1300, and though it had pot been used, still he would sell it to the Council for £900 f.o.b. at Sydney, so as to save reshipping,it back to England.. - Mr. Alison then proceeded to read the, report from Mr. Metcalfe, who went on to say that Mr. Hislop's pump would not lift any ; water to Mount : Victoria, while that of the /Kauri Freehold, Company's would lift 24,000 gallons per, hour; and the.price was reasonable. The Bin main-was now being worked rat more than its full capacity, [and with 24,000 gallons being put through it would raise the pressure to 1751b per square inch. Tho main might stand this, but it was considerably beyond what it was meant for. He estimated the. cost of installation, with freight, building, iron, chimney, and erection, at £2500, which he would regard as money, thrown away. The gain would be practically nothing, as when working two shifts the new-plant would not deliver as much as the old does in three, and' the quantity delivered in three shifts with the new would be barely sufficient for requirements. If the plant was to be increased at all a larger main I was necessary, while the difference in' cost between an economical plant and that under consideration would be comparatively small. . ■ Mr. Alison said that as they could not consider the matter definitely that evening they had better adjourn discussion until Tuesday evening next; when they would hold a special ! meeting. ~' ■ r.y. .
