AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY COUNCIL. THE council of the Auckland University met yesterday ' afternoon. . Sir Maurice O'Rdrke was in'the-chair, find there ' were also present: The Rev. J. Hi' Simmonds, Hods. J. A. Tole and E. % Mitchelson, Dr. McDowell, Messrs. G. L. Poa«iocke, T. U. Wells, and F.i'Ev Baurne, M.H.R. ;On the motion of the chairman, seconded by .-Mr. Peacocke, it was decided to raise .the 1 salary of the registrar '{the Rev. D. W. Rutieiman) to £250 per annum. The question ok panting an Increased remuneration to Mr. M. Walker, lecturer on modern languages, was deterred till-the next meeting. It was reported, that there-was an estimated balance this year ot £85, and also that the income was £55z above the > -Government grants. . Accounts were passed for payment amounting to MQX .us w*' ~' • ''.■ \ ' '■■■■■ LECTURE oN ROBERT BURNS. " In connection with the ; lecture-entertain-raent to be given by the Rev. David Parry on Friday evening next at St. James Hall, entitled, " Robert " Burns, the Ploughman Poet of Scotland;" the Australian papers have published very flattering reports. ihe j Brisbane Telegraph, states!-"The Scotoh--1 men of Brisbane and all lovers of Scottish poetry who attended the Albert Hall last i night, experienced a truly great treat in. the 1 lecture-entertainment given by the Jiev. David Parry, who is one of the most eloquent speakers hlard in this city for a long time. Although Welsh by birth, Mr. Parry experienced no difficulty with the Scottish accent, arid his numerous recitals of Burns . poems would have 1 (satisfied the most exacting admirer of the ploughman poet. Mr. Aarry, in fine flashes of rhetoric,.dealt with, Burns in a kindly spirit, and evolved toe fine les : sons from his poems in attractive stylo. we driuhaiio recital of-, * Scots Wha Hn'e!_ was quite thrilliniif, and the tale of ' Tap O Snanter' roused roars,,of laughter. Other poems "were equally well treated, and the audience thoroughly enjeyed this, Mr. Parry's first lecture in Brisbane."'His: Worship the Mayor (the Hon.. El Mitchelson). will preside, and ■ a very large audience is anticipated.
