THE WAR IN THE EAST.
the FIGHTING AT PORT ARTHUR. FURTHER PARTICULARSRUSSIAN MINE DEPOT DESTROYED. JAPANESE CONFIDENT OF SUCCESS.
ALTHOUGH it appears quite clear that the position of the Russians at Port Arthur is becoming very serious, owing to the great ..-damage done by the Japanese bombardments, the rumour that the stronghold was about to be abandoned is denied. The attack on Sanshantau island, near Talienwan Bay, resulted in the destruction of the signal station and mine depot. The fact that Japanese bonds are quoted at Tokio at seven per cent, above the London quotation, certainly indicates that the Japanese are confident of victory in their straggle with Russia.
